The schooner ‘‘ Logos,” from this city for Baltimore, vic Provincetown, in going into Newport on the 9th p. m., ran ashore on the south point of Goat Island; she, got off at high water withont damage.

A very large squid or devil-fish was washed ashore at Craig Ross, Halifax County, by the late gale, and captured by some tishermen, and las been presented to the Nova Scotia Pro- vincial Museum.

On Friday last Messrs. James Duggan & Sons, Halifax, sold 800 bushels oats at 34c— vart of the schooner ‘‘A. Painchaud,” of P. E. One lot of potatoes were sold at at 44 cents,

but as there was no advance the sale was stopped. Mre. Farnrecs, wife of the Valcartier mur-

derer, is now in Ottawa for the purpose of in- terceding for the life of her husband. She had a long interview with the Deputy Minister of Justice this morning, and also seeks an inter- view with the Governor General.

A CENTLEMAN left Winnipeg on Monday morning last, at 5 o’clock, and arrived at Tor onto on Thursday morning at 15 minutes past 5, doing the 1,609 miles in three days and one and a quarter hours. Seven and a half years ago it took him 18 days to perform the same journey.

THe steamship ‘‘Peruvian” arrived at Hali- fax on Saturday morning, eight days from Moville. She had 9 tons of freight for Hali- fax and 742 tons for St. John and the Upper Provinces. She brought 66 passengers, among whom were the Lord Bishop of Nova Seotia, Mrs. Binney and family.

Frrry-stx Fartturgs have taken place in New York city during November. The total liabilites were $1,479,994; assets, $409,852. This is a decrease cf liabilities from October of over $1,450,000, and an increase of nine in the number of failures. In November, 1877,there were seventy-nine failures, with liabilities of $2, 160,000.

Gey. Grant's brother-in-law laughs at the idea of King Ulysses of Bulgaria, but George W. Childs, who is Grant’s bosom friend, oy that the plans are all laid, and only await the indorsement of the monarchs of Europe. He wishes it stated that he himself cannot be persuaded to accept any position of dignity or office under the Bulgarian monarch.

Str Joun McDonatnv’s Srrecu.—In the speeches at the representation addresses at Ottawa, on the 12th, Sir John indicated that Hon. Dr. Tupper would be his successor in the leadership of the Liberal-Conservative

y. He promised the introduction of a protective tariff the next session, which, he said, would meet at the usual time.

Tue Sackville ‘‘Post” says that the survey of the Cape Tormentine on to that place is completed. It is over 34 miles long—about a mile and a half shorter than the Sackville route. Mr. McLeod has found a route with no engineering difficulties of consequence. On the adoption of that place as the terminus, numerous new factories and an increase of two or three thousand in the population are confidently expected to result.

ARTICLES of agreement were signed at the New York Clipper office on Monday, between John Dwyer, of Brooklyn, and James Elliott, of New York, to fight at catch weights, ac- cording to the new rules of the London prize ring, for $2,000 and the heavy weight cham- pionship of America. The fight 1s to take

lace in Canada the second Thursday in May, Elliott to name the fighting ground. The Clipper office was full of sporting men, who witnessed the agreement of the match.

Two American schooners were wrecked at Shag Harbor, Shelburne County, N. S., in the gales of the early part of the week. Both crews were saved. The schooner “ Lizzie M. Stew- art,” 86 tons, Stewart, master, of Portsmouth,

N. H., owned by Stewart and Co., of that) P ace, and the fishiag schr. ‘‘ Watson Barker,” |

2 tons, Hopkins,master, of Hampden, Mass., and owned by J. Hopkins, of that place. Both vesseis were bound from P. E. Island for Boston with cargoes of potatoes. The Hx. Herald says the cargoes were sold at auction | on Friday.

Mr. Georce W. Mittrver, of this City, while boring a well at Morell recently, dis covered a number of stones which contain a sufficient amount of metal to ensure that a vein of lead, copper, or some other mineral is in close proximity to the place in which they are boring. The stones are on exhibition at the store of J. & T. Morris, Queen Street.

AN experiment has been made by a Halifax firm of shipping dry fish to South America. This, if successful, will open up a large trade for the Provinzes. The barquentine ‘Ocean Swell,” sailed from Halifax on the 13th with a cargo of 2,800 quintals of dry fish for Per- nambueo, Brazil.

A coAL mine has been discovered about a mile from Bridgewater, N.S., towards Mahone Bay. There are good indications. Parties have applied for the necessary right to search. There 1s alsc a copper mine being worked at East Dalhousie, under the superintendence of an American mining engineer.
