"MACLEAN AVOIDS ISSUE

Representatives of the Progressive Conservative Party were on @ampus this week.

About 60 students from all faculties assembled in the Rabertson Library lecture 'Iheater Manday afternoon.

Students showed avid response to the dilemma placed before them by merbers of the official I opposition of the Island government: crispy squares with sugar topping, or

For the first time since the McDonald's UPEI Ath- lete of the Manth award was instituted, a tam-time win- ner has been announced.

For the second consec- utive month, Freshman left winger, Louie Iortie, has captured the honor. After winning the January sequent Iortie, the AUHC scoring champion, has added the Feb-March segment.

Daring the month of Februrary Iortie scored 10 times and assisted on 6 others enroute to be- coming the first panther to win the league scoring crovm. In the playoffs, Lortie scored his fourth hat trick of the season as the Panthers lost to league champion St. F.x.

It was agreed by all that the coffee and cakes were the highlight of the occasion of the appearance on Campus of the leader of the official opposition to the Island Government: J. Angus McLean.

McLean thanked students for turning out, intro— duced five colleagues, and after a sincere promise‘of a government that would listen, sat down.

The floor was opened for an informal discussion of the "concerns" of the students. As one student said:" The pattern of what followed is a familiar one to UPEI students."

Students were offered little to sink their teeth into, except cake.

The dilapidated Island economy was prominent among ung the concerns brought forth by students.

McIean said that if el— ected his government would concentrate on " basic ind:- ustry," including agricult- ure and fisheries.

A Mclean government would "keep away from secondary industries with no inherent base" on the Island.

This comment was directed against the Industrial Park scheme initiated by the Campbell government.

" We can't compete with Hong-Kong," said Mclean.

All these winners will be nomina' ted for McDonalds Athelete of the Year to be announced at Awards Nite.

Instead, _, the discussion snerved on to the well-worn topic of patronage. A‘ McIean government promises to ex- amine the situation.

At this point students began pressing for a state— ment on a matter of direct concern for them: a $ 600. 000 shortfall of funding that is facing UPEI next . year.

Student Ray Shalala presented facts and figures and asked if a McIean gov- vernment would provide the much needed funding.

" The die is already cast for next year," re- plied Nblean, adding that it was the future that wo— uld have to be considered.

Despite a request for a more specific stand on the matter of University funding from another stu- dent, Cheryl Cannon, the discussion moved on to matters more vague, and more safe.

Homosexuality and 'mari juana are matters of federal juristiction, students were informed.

What McIeans presentation lacked in smoothness, it made up for in sincerity. He said he came to listen—- the result was of course predictable——hmever, he did listen.

"Wewanttobeaswell informed as possible." he said.
