Says the Montreal Witness :—Some ten years ago when railway communication was first opened to Manitoba, the horses sent there by rail suffered severely during the journey, and not a few of them never re- covered fully from the hardships endured by the way. Things are wonderfully chang- ed now, and horses shipped to the North- west in Kimball's palace horse cars, arrive at their destination in as good condition as when shipped, and in about half the time formerly spent on the road. These palace horse cars are very long, about fifty feet, and are divided into two compartments, each having eight narrow but comfortable stalls (four on each side) in which the horses stand facing the centre of the compartment, which contains the feed, while the water 1s kept in a large tank on top of the centre of the car, and by means of pipes is readily let into the feeding troughs in front of the horses. Should any of the horses be sick, or require extra attention, or even need to be removed from the car, this can readily be done without disturbtng the others. There is an adjustable bar placed across the car above the hind quarters of the horses, which effectually prevents any attempts at kicking should a nag feel so disposed. The fastening for the horse’s head is so arrang- ed that while the horse has all the liberty required for feeding or drinking, he is not able to bite his neighbor. Should any of the horses show excessive timorousness, the person in charge standirg in the centre of the compartment can readily soothe his equine forebodings with « little patting on the nose. There are over thirty horses to be shipped from the stock yards at Hoche- laga in these palace cars, bound for the Northwest.

There is no doubt but that diphtheria in it worst form is very prevalent in many citle and small towns. Very sharp pains are often felt in the neck glands, just below the ear. The tongue is coated, the throat and tonsils inflamed, little white spots, which in- crease and turn toa dirty yellow or brown color next appear, and a peculiar odor totally unlike ulcerated sore throatisnoticeable. The case of Angus Matheson should serve as @ warning to those persons who think it a very clever thing to impose on newspaper publishers by sending bogus items for pub- lication. A few weeks since a number of items were sent us from Plainfield which we supposed genuine. They were seeming- ly of a most innocent character in so far as anyone not intimately acquainted with that neighborhood could determine. Subsequent revelations, however, proved those items to be false and quite offensive to many of the worthy citizens of Plainfield. The matter was investigated and the discovery made that the author of the bogus correspon- dence was the individual above named. In- formation was at once laid against him and he was summoned to appear in court on Tuesday of this week. Fortunately for Mr. Matheson the prosecution was willing to exercise clemency, and on his confessing his fault and apelogizing for the same, he was let off after paying the entire costs of the proceedings (about $25.) In dismissing the case His Worship, Justice Narraway, spoke in an eloquent and impressive man- ner. He stated that the publisher ofa newspaper, especially when a comparative stranger to many sections throughout which his paper circulates, was largely at the mercy of any unprincipal character, who might seek to impose upon him in such a manner as the present. He assured the de- fendant that the peaalty for such an offence was no slight one, being imprison- ment in the penitentiary for from two years to life. Mr. Matheson may congratulate himseif on being let off so easily but we hope the lesson will prove a salutary one to him and a warning to any others who may be inclined to imitate his smartness.

Whether the proposed constitutional amend- ment in Massachusetts against rum is also against cider, is being, as it ought to be well agitated. We believe fruit-growers feel about manufacturing a home beverage somewhat like the woman whom the learned Dr. Aber- nethy once remonstrated with for mutilating her husband's face and head with jher finger- nails in a family jar. Said che worthy doct- or,—Madam, are you not ashamed, treating the head of this family thus ?—in fact, your head, madam.” The virago retorted fiercely, ** Well, doctor, if that be true, haven't I a right to scratch my own head?’ It seems to us, prohibition advocates should reflect that, so long as humanity is unfitted to its sur- roundings and conditions of life, so long evil will exist, and human beings foolishly try to ‘*drown misery ” with strong drink. But in- crease human h sppiness by every possible means ; lessen that mother’s burden that she may bear more healthy children ; then ameli- orote their hunger, diseage, and pain by better physical as wel! as moral training,and you will have plucked out the most deadly fang of the monster—intemperance, while farmers and fruit-growers are left to pursue an honest call- ing. Acting upon this precept, we would go farther and proclaim that thousands of families are now suffering with troubles that scores of persons have tried to relieve with strong drink. ‘‘Hot lemonade with a stick,” “rock and rye” are familiar recipes. Tem- perance people should teach others to find some better remedy for hacking coughs, bron- chial irritations, catarrhal inflammation, rheu- matism, and neuralgia than whiskey. Said a well known Boston merchant, recently, to a perty of friends: ‘I used to resort to whiskey when attacked with rheumatism and neuralgia. But I know a remedy—Jehnson’s Anodyne Liniment—that will fix it for me every time Truly, it is the most certain remedy known for any pain or inflammation. The Empire's Parliamentary correspondent records the fact that in one of the election campaigns a few years ago the late Mr. James Fahey was going from place to place with Hon.
