The Cadre is the official newspaper of the UPEI Student Union. 2,000 copies of The Cadre are printed 10 times per semester. There are meetings open to anyone Mondays at 4:30 in room 213 in the new Student Union Centre.

The deadline for submissions is Friday at 4:00 PM.

Editorial 11: What's in a Name? Quite a Bit, Actually.

Here we are— back at it for another semester. Classrooms are once again full of slightly confused students, each trying to figure out their new schedule. The Sports Centre is packed with even more slightly confused individuals, each trying to live up to yet another New Year's Resolution.

As these two groups of slightly confused people pass one another on their way to class after working out at the gym, or on their way to the gym after finishing up with class, they may notice a new name on the sign in front of our Student Centre.

No longer will our building be known by its temporary name — "The New Student Centre" — but will now be known as the "W. A. Murphy Student Centre".

It seems a rather generous donation from the private sector has resulted in UPEI creating a fresh title for its newest building. This is no surprise as most universities, including UPEI, allow individuals or businesses who donate large sums of money toward the con- struction of buildings to name the

accept donations in exchange for recognition. Nor is it implying that the Murphy family is undeserving of recognition for their generous donation: The simple fact of the matter is the student population at UPEI has been "donating" money towards the construction of a new student centre since 1991.

. If UPEI was looking for a major contributor to name the New Student Centre then surely the stu- dent body who has seen a chunk of their student fees go towards the construction of the centre for over a decade are deserving of that hon- our.

Perhaps UPEI could have simply named the building "The Student Centre" or the "Student Union Building" and left corporate names out of it entirely.

The building is for students after all. It houses all of UPEI's major student-related services, the offices of the Student Union, and the UPEI student lounge. And, undeniably, it was paid for with the help of thousands of UPEI students, past and present. Why not leave the naming up to them?
