[t is roughly esti- mated that the total liabilities of the firm, including £16.000,000 acceptances, amount to £21,000,000, while their assets at pre- sent prices are valued at £24,000,000. The Government has authorized the Bank of ingland, if necessary, to issue an additional 23,000,060 in nutes, and it will supply the dink Act if requisite.

Reports from the Northwest ranches in- dicate that the season has been a most suc- cessful one. ;

The revenue for the first four months of the present fiscal year exceeds the expen- diture by five million dollars.

The impression here is that the Baring failure will not affect Canadian securities or deposits.

The O'Shea Divorce Case.

Lonpon, Nov. 16. To-day Mrs. O’Shea’s counsel in the di- voree case said he did not intend to cross- examine any witness or call any wit- ness on bebalf of Mrs. O'Shea or take any part in the proceedings. The collapse of

the defence caused an immense sensa- tion, and involves the condemna- tion of Parnell to pay all the costs.

The collapse of the defence is tantamount to an acknowledgment of guilt to the court, and Parnell must pay the cost of the di- voree Sproceedings. ‘The Dublin Express says Parne!l has informed several of the most proninent men of the Irish parlia- mentary party that he will not lead the party in parliament during the coming ses- Slon.

Forger in the Toils.

Albert H. Smith, Jr, partner of the Brokerage Firm of Mills, Robinson & Smith's, 0% Broadway, is a prisoner at police head- quarters, charged with over 70 forgeries, aggregating $350,000. Smith acknowledges his guilt and turned over all his property to W. A. Watson for the benefjt of his creditors, Sinith is forty-five years old. The counsel to Mil's, Robinson & Smith say this evening that the firm has assigned to W. A. Watson.

Overdue Steamers.
