We have to thank the Hon. Mr. Lowe—who has but recently returned from England after a successful negotiation on behalf of the Railway—for copies of the London editions of his recent pamphlets: the first being his masterly speech, delivered in the Nova Seotia Legislature, on the 11th Mareh, 1854, on the Union of the North American Provinces; and the second, a *: Letter to the Hon. Francis Hincks, being a review of his reply to Mr. Howe's speech.’’ We expressed our opinion of Mr. Howe’s magnificent speech, shortly after it appeared in print in the newspapers of the sister Province, and a second perusal of it now, with the author’s corrections, has certainly not lessened our admiration. We observe that it has been reproduced from the Pictou press, in pamphlet form, and we have no doult that it will, as it should, command an extensive cireulation.—The letter to Mr. Hincks bears, upon every page, all the marks of Mr. Howe’s vigorous and eaustic pen, and shews at every turn with what facility he can tumble down the specious arguments of even a clever adversary like Mr. Hincks. Apart from the personal rencontre with the mew Governor of Barbadoes, the Letter gives much new matter on Mr. Howe's favourite topic, namel y, the right to participation by Colonists “*in the public empivyments and distinctions of the Empire,”’ and forms, on that account, an admirable supplement to the speech. We should like to have seen Mr. Hincks’s pamphlet, and judge of its merits from an entire perusal. We can only form an opinion of it from Mr. Howe's Review; and by that we learn, that Mr. Hincks strove to maintain the position, that British American Colonists require nothing further to be done for them at the *hands of the Imperial Cabinet. 1t is rather singular that just about the time the controversy was going on, Mr. Hincks—a British American Colonist—was in pursuit of the privileges and distinctions for himself, for which his adyer- sary was contending on behalf of the whole Colonial world.

HORTICULTURAL EXHIBITION.

Tux annual show of vegetables, fruits and flowers, took place at the Temperance Hallon Wednesday. The spacious room was well filled, and included amongst the visitors His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor. The exhibition of fruits and flowers was very fair, and showed an improvement m the growth of these articles; and as for the vegetables, we do not remember ever having seen finer roots than those exhibited, and we are confident they would vie with similar productions in agy part of the world. In the afternoon, when the prizes had been awarded to the respective competitors, the Amateur Band ap- peared in the Orchestra, and played some of their favorite airs for the entertainment of the company below.
