A woman was killed outright and eight other persons seriously injured.

It ia thought that the explosion was due to ignited gas, but there are rumore of an anarchist plot.

Kinesrox, Jamaica, Nov 16—Consider- able disappointment tas been occasioned by a despatch from Washington avoounc- ing the failure of the negotiations for the proposed Anylo-American reciprocity treaty for the West Indies. ‘The Hon SO Burke, the leader of the “Popular” side in the ueyislature, in an interview in reard to this matter, says: ‘The question pow arises, it the West Indies cannot obtain American reciprocity, cr countervailing duties ia the home markets 1s the only al- tersative to ruin which is left us. A Hero Burned to Death.

Sr. Jony, Nov. 18.—Paul Kingston, aged 69, a hired man with Georze Fitz- patrick, was burned to death in his em~ ployer’s house at 5 lock this morning. It happened on Black River road, about five miles from town, Fitzpatrick had recently bought the house «nd lived there with a grandchild and two very old ladies and Kiogston. When he learned that the

house was on fire he could not get out the door, but sprang from awindow, One

of the ladies escaped, as did tne child. F 'tzpatrick entered the house and carried out the other old lady. He could not flad Kingston, who bad left bis room and entered another, where he was suffocated.
