Alcohol not so Injurious to Men of Little Brains

Men of low intellectual endowment with a taste for strong drink, will de- rive much comfort from the result of one of the latest experiments which the French temperance society has been making on the aleoholization of pigs. The experiments which were com- meneed in 1879, on a number of pigs of the so-called Anglo-Chinese breed, have been continued ever since. Eezch pig was kept ta @ separate sty, but twice a day they were all fed together in an adjoining yard. Alcohol was mixed with their feed, and after each meal they ali fel! into a deep sleep, but show- ed no signs of excitement, except now then a slight museular trembling. The difference of alcohol on humaa beings and pigs is believed to arise from the smpliness of pigs brains, tor the larger the brain the more dangerous the effect of intoxication. Hence, although the companions of St. Anthony may occas- ionally indulge in their taste for juniper, they are in no denger of being attacked by delirium tremens .---Pall Mall Ga- zette, April 26.

————tl> -@ +e A Disastrous Fire.

The most disastrous fire in Worcester Mass, for thirty years occurred on the night of the 15th inst. A general alarm called the entire department to South Worcester, two miles from the city, where tae Pakachoag mill, owned by George Crompton, was found in flames. The mill was of brick, 270 feet long, and in some portions four stories in height; itwas used for the manufacture ef woollen yarn, and was running day and night. The fire spread so rapidly, that many of the operatives had to jump from the upper windows, The entire mill was destroy- ed, and it was with the greatest diffi- eulty that other mills were saved. The total loss is roughly estimated at $150,- 000, on which there isan insurance of $28 500 on building, and $84,000 on stock and machinery, and many of the operatives were seriously injured by

The editor of the London Times’ re- ceives $25,000 salary; the Standard pays $15,000; Daily News, $20,000; senior editors of the Telegraph receive $17,500 each. Manchester Guardian, $15,000; Pall Mall Gazette Spectator and Saturday Review, each, $10,000; St. James Gazette, $9,090 and Punch $15,000. Mr. Dana’s inceme from the New York Sun last year, including salary, was $4,000 a week. The paper now pays a regular dividend of 5 per cent a month, and occasionally an extra dividend, just to keep the stockholders from getting the blues. The dividend for the year past was over 80 per cent.

The Growth of Western Cities.

Referring to the rapid growth of western cities, the Canadian-American points out that paralled examples are yet to be found in the east. It states that “ten years ago St. Thomas, on the Canada Southern, was a place of 1,800: to-day it is a thriving and bustling city of 11,000. Another Ontario town that has grown wonderfully during the past five years is Cornwall, which las more than doubled in population in that period, aod now boasts of 9,000 inhabi-
