Yuk Yuk’s Review Yukky or not?

On September 9th, Yuk Yuk’s put ona performance at the Barn. There was a long line-up at the door, and by nine, the place was packed! People waited impatiently for the show to get on the road as the room got warmer and louder. Half an hour later, the spotlight went on.

There were three comedians, all totally different from each other. The first guy cracked mostly political jokes, with topics ranging from Rodney King to Canadian patriotism, as wellas violence, war, Quebec, Newfoundland and Canada’s ties with the States. Some of his lines are ‘‘What do ya think of Quebec joining the States? And ya think that we’re giving them rough time!’’ and ‘‘Canada - we’re a nation of drunks!”’

The second guy was funnier. ! applaud him for staying away from those political jokes. This guy whipped up some cool jokes that were neutral and light, for example: ‘‘A man with a cold tends to have a whistling nose... a little bit later, you can start to recognize Roger Whittaker tunes; I picked Flowers for my girlfriend, from the cemetery I passed by; Smoking is the cause of whining and bitching among non- -smokers’’,etc. To top it off, he even sang a song about broken-hearts and dishwashing. It was a country song witha twist of heavy metal interlude in between. Oh yeah, he had to say something about “‘stomping Sinead O’ Connor dancing like a hair-dresser milking a cow.”’

I had been warned not to sit zight in the front because I would get picked on, so I didn’t. When the third comedian(who will remain nameless) came on, he made some rough jokes (if you can call those jokes) on the atti- tudes of drinkers and non-drinkers in the room. He definitely picked on the people in the front, and he was without mercy. At first people found it funny when he told everyone to ‘*shut-up,’’ but he did that at least twice every five minutes (he should have told himself to shut up). Is it safe to say that he whined and complained his way into the audience’s heart and laughter?! Some of his lines are ‘‘Do ya know anything about Canada? You’ ve got lots of moose there right? Yeah, | ran over them in Toronto!,’’ ‘‘There’s too much enthusiasm, ya like it but it’s sooo disruptive - shut up!,’’ ‘“East makes fun of West, vice versa, but everyone makes fun of New- foundland,’’ on-non-drinkers- “‘If you can unbutton your top button, then perhaps you can get your laugh out,’’ *‘ I think alcohol is the coolest drug in the world,”’ and ‘‘I’d like to make you smile and make you hate me again.’’ By the time he was done, the room was almost empty. Is it any wonder that someone threw ice at him?! Enough said.

Overall, the show was both yukky and funny. It is worth $4.00 for the experience, but I wouldn’t go back to ita second time. ;
