Baxep Hau.—It is frequently asked why some hams taste so much better than others. This would not be the case if they were baked, and not boiled until all tte sweetness was extracted, which is general- iv done in the majority of cases where they are found tasteless and discolored. Of course a great deal depends upon the quality of the ham, and none but the best sugar cured should be selected. Here is a good rule for their treatment: Make & stiif paste of four and water, with which completely cover the ham. Then p'ace it in a bake pan containing a little water, with which it must be oc- casionally basted. It will require about four or five hours to bakea ham of me- diam size in a moderate over. The cook must of course use her jndgment by testing it occasionally with a fork. At the expira- tion of time remove the har, and the eo- tire top can be peeled off like a sheet ot leather, leaving only the fat exposed, which must Le well covered wit: bread crumbs. An anti-Sultan demonstration was held in Hyde Park on Sunday by the working- men of London. Twelve platforms were erected fram which speakers addressed the assembly. Resolutions were adopted by acclamation calling upon the British Gov- ernment to briog renewed and increased pressure to bear upon the great powers to secure united action to prevent the Sultan from continuing his carnival of blood. The resolution assured the government that the workingmen would support it in any step it might t ke in this direction.
The Qneen and Pope have exchanged cordial letters upon the occasion of the sixtieth anniversary of Her Majesty’s reign. The Pope, after congratulating Her Majes ty and sending his best wishes, thanked the Queen in grateful terms for the freedom of worship enjoyed by Roman Catholice throughout the British empire. The rep'y of Her Majes:y was most cordial. She declared herself happy to repeat her former assurances of the perfect freedom of Catholics within her dominions, and added that it was her pleasing duty to acknowledge their fidelity and loyalty.
The Toronto Globe supports the sug- gestion that the Ontario Government should establish smelting works for the purpose of testing the commercial value of the iron ore deposits in the Province. The cost of the suggested works would be very heavy, and their operation might not do all the good hoped for.
