PreSently showing at the Confed Art Gallery until Oct. 3, is a Roth- mans presentation of "3 Artistas Mexicanos".

Jose Luis Chevas is noted for his lithograhps and reveals the world which surrounds him in the harsh features of tattered humanism. He presents a panoramic View of social Mexico and his intention is not to either condemn or justify it but rather to describe it in terms of his own sensibility, without imbuing it with any message whatever. His language — direct, agg— ressive and precise —

is a distillation of hone in the aptitudes of man,

placing the artist at the very centre point between sensitivity and the pro- blems of today in a way not merely pictorial but eXistential. , . Xavier Esqueda; is re- nOWned for his oil on can— vas and his philosophy reiterates the needs of man as his own maker. He does not merely express these needs as a painful; process but with faith in the possibility of a fut- ure reality which will be better. In the clarity of his contemporary symbols there is always a hopeful splendour. Esqueda creats original works of art which attract by their freshness and move the spectator by the inter- élay of sfiapes and col- ér‘s , which: occasionally

can lead to the absurd. His themes are relatively limited; fruits, espec-.‘ ially pears, geometric figures; mechanical parts: landscapes in which the objects appear aw though forgotten there, or sim- ply Waiting.

Though.Esqueda's efforts are immediately enjoyable *as visual puns and are seemingly simple, he often makes poignant statements about our times. Using an international language of communication, his work remains open to private interpretation according to one's personal visions and experienCes which is a major reason why I greatly appreciated this mans works of art.

Finally we have the baroque art of Pedro~ Friedberg,,which relates. to the cathedrals and the altars of the vice—regency, it imposes an elegance without clamour, cosmic and objective which is open equally to visible reality, to fantasy and to the human dimensions to which we all aspire.~

His sculpture, in which the fine lines of sculpt— ure and hard edge of ink drawings mingle with a super-abundance of ara- besques, constitutes a highly individual app- roach to surrealism, which has led him to produce a body of inventive work comprised of a series of useful and functional objects, as well as some

It now flourishes in basics ally refined and individ— ual expressions which are however, communicative of a sense of a classic and generous humanism. of superb craftsmanship with an inherent sense . ofcpoetic'hope.
