James Clow was ap- pointed Vice-President of the Association. It was moved by R. W. Sprague, and seconded by Hou James Clow, that George F. Owen, of Cardigan, be appointed Sec- retary, which was agreed to. On motion of Hon. A. J. McDonald, seconded by J. Lavers, Capt. A general discussion then took place as to the best means of carrying on the business of the Association, and arrange- ments were made for soliciting subscrip- tions for stock, of which some $1500 have not yet been taken up.

On motion of Dr. Barnes, seconded by Hon. Chas. Clow, a committee ot five was appointed to obtain information respecting the feasibility and expenses of fencing and constructing a trotting course on the Western Square at Georgetown, said Com- mittee to report to the first meeting of the Managing Committee of the Association ; and also to report'as to the nature of the operations that it would be neccessary to undertake this year.

The Markets.

Boston, May 29.

Receipts of potatoes past six days 51,000 bush ; previous six days 47,000 bush. The arrivals of old stwck have been moderate this week and good, hard, sound lots have been selling fairly. The supply now on hand is rather light, especially of good eastern sorts. Western are also pretty well sold up, hut some of them had to go at low prices. Chenangoes are in light supply and close firm at 85c. Magnums have been ‘quite plenty but gradually cleaning up and close steady at quotations. Receipts of new southern have been large and prices have fallen rapidly. For the past day or two, most sales have been at about $3.00 with some of the best marks at $3.25 pei bbl.

Receipts of eggs have been pretty full this week, but there has been a steady de- mand and prices have made a further ad- vance. Eastern are in light supply, especi- ally strictly extra lots and such stock sells in a small way at full prices. N.S., N. B. and P. E. Island stock is moving off fairly at quotations. Western range from 14} and 15c. ag to grade, but only selected marks bring lic,

There is very little doing in fish, and quotations for all Jines are largely nominal. There is very little doing in bbl herring and prices nomina'ly unchanged. Hardly enough mackerel selling to establish quo- tations .—

The weather is al! that can be desired, and the crops are coming on with great vigor. The foliage is about out in fu’ l, and ornamental trees are in bloom. The well- cultivated fields, the orderly and systemati- cal appearance of the tarms, the comfort- ablo buildings, all together give the coun- try at this season of the year a grand ap- pearance,

The inhabitants of Lower Montague have two neat little churches, viz., the " Presby- terian and Methodist, where Divine ser- vices, Sabbath School and prayer meetings are {requently held. Rev. W. H. Spercer is pastor of the former, and Rev. John Goilcsmith of the latter.

The Keefer Lodge, No. 46, of I. 0. G. T., at Lower Montague is still on the rapid increase, and bids fair to become one of the leading lodges in the Province. The Legislative Council Election is now the géneral conversational topic. Mr. Poole, the popular resident candidate, re- ceives a hearty and encouraging support in all sections of the district, and wili conse- quently be elected by a large majority.

Messrs. W. A. Poole & Co. have a good general store and does a good business, and ships largely. Mr. Benjamin Aitken has also a good store and does a fair business.

Farming is well advanced. Many of the farmers expect to finish cropping this week.

Herring fishing in these parts was fairly successful. The fishermen are now pre- paring for the more important fisheries of cod and mackerel.

Mr. Houstan, of Rustico, has completed a fine boat for Messrs. J. W. McDonald, jr.. and J. D. McAulay. The boat, which promises to be speedy, has been named the Nellie Bly.

The farmers, tov, are awakening to their interests, and four of the most progressive and go-ahead among them have purchased a schooner, which mer named the Farim- ers’ Glory, from Mr. N. Pelley. Taey in- tend trading in cattle ‘and farm produce with St. Pierre and the neighboring prov- inces, thus securing t» themselves the pro- fits which would otherwise pass into the hands of middle-men.

Mr. J. W. McDonald, our enterprising merchant, 1s doing quite a rushing business in the dry goods line. He hes lately stock- ed his store with choice spring goods, and is bound to keep abreast of the times.
