Augustine Cove Camps Opens

The I957 summer camping sea- son at the Merc church Camp at Augustine Cove opened July 2, with the senior boys for a ten day camp. This year's director is Rev. Heber Kean, O'Leary. while Rev. Linday Graves, Tryon is registrar and business manager.

Enrollment will be about over- age while the number of appli- cations for girl's camp from July i6 - 23 has been more than can be accommodated.

Dates for the young Young Peoples camp are July 26-28 with liliss Eleanor Coffin. 143 Euston St. Charlottetown. as registrar.

The aim of the Atlantic Provinces Cerebral Palsy Confer- ence shail be to foster and encour- age the care and treatment of all persons within the Atlantic Pro- vinces who are affected by Cere- bral Palsy. organizations and encouraging the formation of such further Cerebral Palsy Organiza- tions as is deemed necessary. The Conference shall consist of or- ganizations and groups (whether incorporated or otherwise) within the Atlantic Provinces. whose aims are devoted in whole or in part to the care and treatment of per- sons affected by Cerebral Palsy. it was decided to have the annual picnic for the children at Rocky Point. Each year more and more far- mers are spraying their con fields with chemical week killers; mainly to eradicate the weeds in the row that are difficult if not im- pos 'h' to iemove by cultivation. Under normal weather conditions. corn at a height of 3 to in inches is rather resistant to injury by 1. 4-D. If, however. dry warm wea- ther follows the treatment. leaf roll and brace root injury may be moderate to severe, but not likely to cause as much reduction in yield as a heavy infestation of weeds in the corn row. Also. when a heavy rainfall comes right after spraying the same injuries appear.

Under such conditions the corn is very susceptible to wind injury or to contact when cultivation. Cultivation should therefore, be delayed for at least 10 to it days following the spraying. I should add that the injury to corn from the causes I have mentioned increas- es with the belght of the corn. The shorter the corn when it is spray- ed. the less likelihood of injury. If the corn is I2 to 24 inches tall and flare are many weeds in the rows, we consider this an emer- gency situation and may be handi- ed by using drop pipes on the boom
