On de- cember 29, 1989, Brighton Rock was on PEI for the second time this year. This time, CIMN got an interview with bass player Ste- vie Skreebs. I started the inter- view by asking Stevie about the band’s beginnings.

Stevie: It goes back about six years. Brighton Rock originated in a basement in Niagara Falls. Greg (Fraser, guitarist) and I were together about six years ago. Then we hooked up with Gerry (McGhee, lead vocals). We moved the band to Hamilton and started working out of a base- ment in Hamilton, got on the Q107 Homegrown Contest, and won it. From there we got a deal with WEA Records. We’ve got

one EP and two albums out.

CIMN: What were some of your influences?

Stevie: I’d say Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, and Black Sab- bath. John (Rogers, Keyboards)

We’ll be having more training sessions next week. Just a reminder to all present DJ’s that with all our new equipment, ideas, etc, they are also required

to participate in the training ses- sions (classes one, two, and three) as well.

So... here’s the rundown on the training schedule for the week of January 22-26. Class 1 will be held on Monday at 12:30 and again on Friday at 4:00. Class 2 will be held or Monday at 4:00, Tuesday at 12:30 , Wednesday at 12:30 and Thursday at 4:00. Class 3 will be held on Tues- day at 4:00, Wednesday at 4:00, Thursday at 12:30 and Friday at 12:30.... phew! Everyone should be able to find classes that fits their schedule, however, we may

have more classes if necessary.

Sandy MacLure, who has been DJing at CIMN for a while has now been bestowed with the title of Production Assistant. He’ll be around the station for an hour sr so each week at a time that will be posted, to give a hand to other DJ’s who want to produce promos for their shows, pre-record programs or do any- thing else that seems increbibly technical. so if you’re not quite sure how to do something, you

CIMN: Brighton Rock is a hard rock band, yet the songs which receive the most airplay are the ballads. What’s your theory on that?

Stevie: That’s basically out of our control. It’s just what the radio programmers can fit in be- cause all of our other tunes are © too heavy, but our next album, John’s playing a lot more guitar and less keyboards. Almost all the tunes are gonna be rockin’, really heavy.

CIMN: So you’ve been work- ing on the next album already?

Stevie: Oh yeah! We were in LA about three weeks ago. we were down there for a month and we recorded six new demos. We wrote a bunch of tunes and just recorded six.

Stevie: Well, you’d have to ask Gerry about that. They’re his songs. He’s always been into Stephen King and stuff like that and is always writing about hor- ror stories. Jack is like a modern day Jack the Ripper and Outlaw is a sequel to it. So, there will

probably be a “Jack Book III”, but I don’t know if it’ll be on the next album. Maybe somewhere down the line.

CIMN: With such a rigor- ous touring schedule, do you find it hard to maintain relationships outside of those with band mem- bers?

Stevie: Oh yeah, it is tough. That’s why when you’re at home you have to make the most of it, make sure you see your friends, and the girlfriend is the tough one. ‘Take for instance, we get home next week, and I play hockey three nights, so she’s gonna be bitchin’ about the cause we take off for out west after that. It’s really important to have a se- cure foundation at home.

CIMN: How do you relax and unwind while on tour?

Stevie: We’re really sports fa- natics away from the music, and that’s really our release. We re- ally get into sports. We argue about it because we all have dif- ferent favorite teams.

CIMN: With all of the tour- ing you do, there must be a lot of unique and funny situations. Are there any you would like to share?

CIMN: What does 1990 hold for Brighton Rock?

Stevie: Well, we hopefully will be recording the new album by April. Look for a late summer, early fall release and then we'll go at it again.
