Annual Closing Rochford Square High School

The annual closing of Ilochford square High School, comprising grades lo and 11 was held in the school auditorium last night. Mr. H. P. MscPhee of the City School Board, presided.

The stage was beautifully decor- atod with spring flowers to form a pleasing setting for the girls in their white and pastel colors. Pu- pils of grade nine were dressed in their blue and white school unl- forms were seated below the stage.

The Governor Generals Medal was awarded to Miss Rhoda Long- aphie and the Bishops Cross for Ethics was awarded to Miss Bar- bara Patricia Gallant.

Special Meeting Of Cily Council

At a special meeting of the City Council called to consider the pur- chase of a road grader and scarl- lier, His Worship Mayor Stewart and seven of the Councillors were present. Councillor E. C. Johnstone was absent from the meeting.

On motion of Coun. Mccormac. ('flfll1'II1&n of the street committee, it was moved that the City pur- chase a second hand machine from A. Pickard and Company for the sum of 55,000 plus the trade in on file present mE('i1lllE which is too light for the duties required of it.

His Worship called attention to zhe fact that the machine was one Lliat the Government had had for two years and could not get rid of it. He was not in favor of the purchase. several councillors en- terecl into the discussion and while .hey were not generally in favor of .he purchase of a used machine. it was pointed out that a machine was needed immediately and the value of one of the type proposed was $20,000 with snow plow at- cached.

Coun. A. Gormley introduced a motion calling for the installation of two sets of traffic lights by the Redmond Electric Company to be installed at the corners of Queen and Euston Streets, and Prince and Grafton Streets. This company installed the first traffic lights placed in the City and since that time is has been the practice to have the same firm install any ad- ciltlonal lights. It is the duty of the contractor to service thelighfs after they are put into operation.

Councillor MacDonald the motion on the grounds that the Redmond Electric Company, was no longer a city firm. Their business is now located outside the limits. He also recalled a previous resolution in which it was unani- mously agreed that in all cases contracts would be given to city firms who were able to do the work.

Found Both Drivers Equally Negligent

A jury found the two drivers equ- ally negligent in a case before the Supreme Court Monday. Mr. Jus- tice M. R. MacGuiga.n presided. Thr- case was that of Rawleigh MacR.ae of Charlottetown and Dartmouth, plaintiff vs. Hinsoll Hughes, Har- rington, defendant. It concerned a collision between the plaintiff’: car and the defendant's truck at the corner of Fitzroy and Edward Streets on Nov. 15. 1952.

Knud Jorgensen was fined 510 for not appearing when summoned as a juror.
