How many times have you applied for a summer job, let's say, and you didn't get the job... because you had NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE. If you think its bad now, what will it be like when you apply for a job when you get out of university? Let's face it folks, when your resume goes across an employers desk along with three thosand other names, and you have no experience in the work world; where do you think the employers are going to put your resume? Of course, there going to file it ... right into the circular filing cabinet.

Well at last someone is trying to do something about it! Last May, U.P.E.I.S.U., V.P. Hiternal came up with the idea of getting students some work experience by getting them to work for free, doing small marketing and other business related jobs, in the ’P.E.I. business community. 'ifiiong with four other students they took this ideal“ and moulded it int6.3 an association called "Student Career Oriented Projects Association” or in .short S.C.O.P.A.

S.C.O.P.A. is a voluntary, non—profit organization which is here to help the student with "no previous work experience." Presently it just deals with Business students, but hopefully within the near future it w'll diversify it concerns in o 0 er are s 0 academic life i.e. social work, political science.

The way the system works, the board of

directors picks the projects they think would be beneficial, then place the students they think would be most appropriate for the job to the certain project, and then send them on their way. The Board of Directors will then help and give input to problems, and some certain Profs said they are also available for consultation. Once the solution has been solved, it is presented to the firm, whether it is implemented or not is the firms decision, for we don’t take responsibility for the

outcome. After successful completion of two projects, the student will recieve a reference from the Board.

To be up front, these projects are no birthday party. They are real life situations which require real work. It is for this reason that this association will become a success. If you have any questions or want to get involved in S.C.O.P.A., you can contact
