The Hop Bitters Regatta

Special despateh to Examiner. Lonpon, Nov. 18.

The contest fer the Hep Bitters Prize of £1000, between oarsmen from all parts of the worl, commenced this morning.

The first heat, between Laycock of Aus- tralia, Elliott, Hawdon and Tarryer, re- sulted in a victory for Laycock, who had everything his own way.

The second heat, in which Ross, Riley, Largan and Feely rowed, was won by Ross with ease. Riley several times managed to spurt and gain on him.

In the third heat, Smith, of Halifax, was the favorite. He rowed Hosmer, And raon and Gibson. Hosmer took this heat, Smith a poer second. Smith, who was the favorite, and who was considered a sort of “dark horse,” disappointed his friends.

The fourth heat Trickett took with ease, rowing against Nicholson and Clasper, of England.

To-sorrow’s race will be as follows:—Ist heal, Laycock and Hawdon; 2nd heat, Ross and Riley; 3rd heat, Hosmer and Smith; 4th heat, Trickett and Nicholson.

Ress is the favorite in sporting circles here for Monday’s race.

Lonpon, Nov. 19.

Ross won Pst heat, beating Hosmer a length, Riley and Nicholson, following. Race was fine. In the second heat, Laycock Smith, Trickett and Hawdom finished in order named.

Laycock rowed splendidly. The final race in the regatta will be rowed to-morrow. The contestants are Ross, Smith, Laycock and Hosmer.

Lonpvon, Nov. 17. The press association says that the re- ports of differences in the Cabinet seem to he well founded. Messrs. Bright and Chamberlain have pronounced absolutely #gains< coercion in Ireland. Several Min- isters favor the convocation of Parliament in ecember to authorize a suspension of the Habeas Corpus Act, but no decision hag been reached. Dustin, Nov. 17.

At the weekly meeting of the Land League on Tuesday, Mr. Eagan stated that the traversers intended to proceed against the Ecpress and Mail (newspapers) for at- tempting to prejudice the jury and prevent the traversers from receiving a fair trial.

An additional reward of £500 has been offered for the discovery of the murderer of Lord Mountmorris.

A telegram from Ballinrobe says that 400 additional troops will be sent there imme- diately. ‘The Land League has refused to sanction the expedition of Lord Erne’s house, because of the excited state of the country.

The News says we may assume that the manner of dealing with the condition of Ire- land will occupy the attention of the Cabi. net Council to-day and probably by the end of the week the Government will have come to a decisive understanding.

The fire at the State Insane Asylum at St. Peters, Minn., last night, proves to have been a terrible disaster, attended with loss of life, the particulars of which have not reached here yet.

Only one wing of the building was burned. The whole structure, which was

ten years in course of construction, was finished three years ago at a cost of $500,000.

The loss by fire is $150,000. Reports of the loss of Jife vary from two or three to fifty, but no bodies have been found, and no one is surely known as missing.

When the danger from the fire became imminent the superintendent ordered the release of all the patients, and it is probable that in the confusion some were overlooked. This probability is increased by the fact that some rooms were quickly filled with smoke and could not be entered by the rescuers. E

There were 656 patients in the hospital last year. The inmates were cared for after the fire by the citizens.

[t is thought that some took advantage of the fire to run away, while others wandered aimlessly about.

A \Metin to the Pionesr Press from St. Peters says that a number of lives were lost by the burning and freezing of patients av the Insane Asylum, variously estimated at from 20 to 25. The loss on the building is $300,000. A special says the scenes at the fire were heart rending. So appalling a sight has rarely been witnessed. The patients in the annex wing were males. Many of thei refused to leave the build- ing at all, and ran up and down the halls screaming and crying. Those whe could- neither be coaxed nor forced ont of the building were those who were suffocated or suffered a horrible death in the flames. The others were saved, some by ladders and some by leaping from the windows. Some were nearly nude, some shoeless and hatless, and all exposed to exceeding cold, These were to be seen in all directions, flying in wild fright from those who at- tempied to save them. The air was bitter cold and the poor wretches, with half naked bodies and bleeding feet, were lying about and hiding in alleys and dark cor- ners. hero were about 600 patients in the building, and every inch of the space was utilized. What will be done with those saved, with their malady increased by the excitement of the occasion, is now 4 serious question.

Troubled Ireland.

The latest news from [Ireland is:—

That. Father O'Malley has organized a deputation to wait upon the Earl of Erne to offer to pay full rent on condition that Capt. Boycott, who appears to be an object of detestation, is dismissed.

That Father O'Malley, in an interview he had with a New York Herald reporter, said ‘the proposed that the expedition should show the utter ridiculousness of the situation at Lough Mask. He thought that the affair would tend to hasten the final settlement of the land question, in which he was insympathy with the rest of the county. ‘When we are gone north,’ he said, ‘you will have an army of horse, foot and dragoons guarding an agent from ten- ants who are gone on along journey for the purpose of offering their rent to the landlord.”

Taat in the case of the indicted agitators a bill of particulars has been furnished by the prosecution to the .traversers. It states that the traversers have tried to terrify laudlerds and prevent them from legally enforcing pay- ment of rent by holding meetings, displaying placards and banners and circulating reports of the speeches made at the aforesaid meetings In Various papers.

That the jury on the inquest of Mr. Wheeler, returned a verdict that the deceased was murdered by some unknown person.
