That season the fish was bought from the fishermen, on the understanding that when the duty was re- turned the fishermen would receive that refund, and the shippers of the Province are still held accountable by the fishermen for every dollar shouid the amount be re- turned.” &c.

We think it highly probable that Mr. McDonald is misreported, at least so far as to make the above remarks, which are only true of some of the claimants, apply to the whole of them. In the case of Hall & Myrick the whole of the $20,818.69 appears to have ban paid on Fish which belonged to themselves, while the other amount, $9,583, was paid on Fish belonging to Jol:n A. Matheson, L. C., Owgn, D. Ross, and other Island merchants ; a smal! portion also of this amount would, if refunded, belong to the crews of some of the vessels.

Mr. Davies seizes the words attributed to Mr. A. C. McDenald in Hansard: takes it for granted that Hall & Myrick’s refund helonged to the fishermen, and on this ground defends his objection to the vote because the refund to Hal! & Myrick was omitied. This defence has aow broken down,because the $30,086.10 included duties paid through Hall & Myrick on fish belonging to fishermen and other British subjects.

We repeat that it would be ridiculous, and even worse than ridicalous, for the Dominion to indemnify American ‘citizens for losses sustained by them through a breach of faith on the part of their own Goveroment. Mr. Davies says in his letter that the United States on grounds “undignified and untenable repudiated payment.” If so, how can he with any respect for Canada and its people, say that we should indemnify Americans for inflicted through the bad faith of their own country? When the Govern- ment of Canada has indemnified our Island merchants, as we trust they will notwithstanding the opposition of Messrs Blake and Davies, we cherish the hope | that the United States Government will |
