BASICALLY, a sea vyar, the U. S. Navy had one oi the most vital roles oi the armed forces in the war against h- pan. The tm-ning point in the war came in two great sea battles, ~at Midway and the Coral Sea, when the Navy halted hp advances east and south. At Mldw , June 8-0, 104i, hp occups on and car- rier forces heading ior Wake were thoroughly beaten as de- scribed in map at leit. In May, i942, a U. S. task iorce had in- tercepted a hp naval squadron moving from Rabaul into the Coral Sea with the intention oi expanding southward. 0AA!‘ land bombers attacked, then suriace forces closed in, as shown in rnap at right. The struggle ended with 11 Jap ships sunk or damaged, and remainder ﬂeeing northward. From then on, the war rolled back against the Japs and, in October, 1944, U. S. troops in- vaded Leyte under cover o! an- other great uaval battle; map at lower right. lt was like a three-ring circus with U. S. planes and submarines in Ring One south oi Leyte; Vice Adml. Marc A. Mitscheﬂs planes in Ring Two oﬂ San Bernardino Strait; and Adml. William F. l-lalsey’s Third Fleet in Ring Three to the north.
