Gilles In the Pulpit.

The tenets of John Wesley and his disviples were eagerly embraced in Nor- folk, and Giles frequently became a lo cal preacher. One ‘“‘local,’’ Sam by name, is described as ‘‘a born teacher,”’ though his similes often dropped to the burlesque. On one occasion he took for his text, ‘‘The wages of sin js death,’’ and prefaced his sermon as follows:

**My fri’nds, Brother Paui tells us that the waages o’ sin is death. Now, Jet's see wuther we kin grasp wot he maan by’t. S’pose I wor tu go an du my haarwest for Mr. H. (a local farmer), an arter all the wuk wor dun goan ax Mr. T. (another farmer in the same vil- lage) fur my waages, wot du yeou think Mr. T. would saay? Sure-ly he would up and saay, ‘Sam, yeou airafule. Go an ax Mr. H. fuz yer waages; yeou ha’ dun yer haarwest there. Wot du yeou come an ax me fur yer waages fur?’ An ef I wuk all my loife fur the daavil an go tu God fur my reward be wool saay, ‘No, no, Sam; veou go tu the daavil fur yer reward; yeou bey wuked fur him in the haarwest o’ loife; he must pay yeou.’ ’’— Westminster Gazette.

An amusing example of the Irish- man’s pronunciation occurs in a story told of the late Dr. Todd, the Irish archeologist, who, although a great scholar, was not above perpetrating a practical joke The London Spectator tells the story and says:
