Last weekend the varsity Panthers further increased their chances for a play- off position with exciting wins over St.F.X. and U.N. B. Other than the final outcome, the games provided Panther followers with their first look at the team, a- gainst relatively strong league apposition. Fresh fror the shutout victories over Mt.A. and Moneton, the‘ varsity club met a deter- mined Xaverian team andnar- rowly defeated the Nova Sootians in a game that re— cuired an overtime period. In this contest, the Panth- ers appeared only to.exert themselves when needed. After falling behind early in the game, the team, through spasmic olay, tied

occasions before taking a 4—3 lead late in the third

.period. Then with victory

minutes away , the Panthers seemed to rely too heavily upon their lead and as a consequence legargic play resulted in X. tying the score and forceing an over- time period. In the "do or die showdown",however the Panthers play was sparkling. For the entire ten minutes the cats combined a tight defence with a lethal attack to outscore the Xmen 2-0, and take the game 6-4.

The following evening the

teaM's inconsistent play was again evident. In fact, it was so obvious that it brought many a frustrated

altered from that of brill- ance to lethorgy,as time an' —d again they took lead on- ly to have the Red Devils capitalize on listless play and tie the score.Although the final score readB—6 in the Panther's favor,the game was not decided until the final minutes and had it not been for the play of some members of the var— sity squad the outcome cool —d have been entirely diffe -rent.

Even though the team as a unit was characterized by moody play,several in- dividuals exhibited bril -lant performances.0f these most noteable were Billy Adams who fired a hat trick against St.F.X., Billy Do- herty who skated miles and scored the winner in the X game; Don Brown and Bill weatherby, defensemen who turned in a remarkable gam- es against St.F.X.Guy De Souliner who had many key saves off St.F.X.;and Cloud -e Lambertand Alan MacAdam who checked tenacioucly in both games.

There is no doubt,how— ever that the Panthers can

play consistently as a team The wins over X and U.N.R.
