NEW YORK (AP ~ Voters in The Associated Press poll have matte official what most people already know. Danny Murtaugh is major league manager of the year.

The man who piloted Pittsburgh Pirates to second place in the Na- tional League race after they gen- erally had been picked to finish seventh or eighth was a landslide choice of the sportswriters and sportscasters taking part in the balloting.

Last year Lopez. was the choice in the American League, and Haney, who gave Milwaukee its first world series title. was the Na- tional League selection.

It was Murtaugh's first full sea- son as a major league manager. He had succeeded Bobby Bragan as Pirate pilot Aug. 3, 1957, with the team in last place. ,

It was in a tie with Chicago Cubs for seventh place when the season ended and few had the temperity to pick them for a higher position this year. There were just too many problems fac- ing the 41-year-old former second baseman who had been a coach with Pittsburgh for almost two years.

FIGHT FANS who moaned over a disoppointing card at the Sports Arena last month weren’t in any such frame of mind following Wednesday night‘s entertainment. If they had come seeking action in abundance, they got what they were looking for.

Right from (the opening bell of the curtain raiser to the time Mario Nini was unable to answer the call for the eight round. there was scarcely a dull moment. Everyone of the eight fighters gave everything they had to provide the cash customer with value for their money. What they did was sufficient to send all home in a happy frame of mind, realizing that the performers could not have been expected to do any more than they did.

DON ‘DUCK' TRAINOR looked pretty sharp is disposing of Mario Nini. Indeed it looked as if ‘Duck‘ had the affair closed out in the first round but Mario fought back to dsplay a game- ness that would be hard to equal. Trainor gave the woodsman from Northern New Brunswick 3 terrific hammering as he kept jabbing that fact continually from the opening ,bell. Nini, far from- being a smart boxer, but dead game all the way, tried des- perately to slug his way to victory but ‘Duck' had an answer for every move he made. '

NINI WAS on-the canvass when the bell halted the *seventh round. His seconds worked feverishly on him in the one minute interval but it was to no avail. Mario's left eye was all but c105ed and his face was like a piece of beef-steak. There just wasn't any chance of his continuing. But no fighter ever earned his money more than Mario did. He never once showed any inclin- ation to call it quits and the fans admired him for his game stand.

Trainor, on the other hand, was master all the way. It was probably was one of ‘Duck's’ greatest performances as he gave Nini no chance whatsoever to get started. He boxed beautifully, hit with real authority and demonstrated his ability to take the best that Mario had to offer. Nobody could ask much more of the Charlottetown policeman.

IN THE SEMI-FINAL. Bruno Boucher 'proved beyond all doubt that he is a really rugged individual. Boucher was con- sidered by most of those in the ‘know’ as not quite good enough for Summerside's Walter ‘Peanuts’ Arsenault. Arsenault had been quite impressive in his recent win over ‘Slugger' Turnbull and folks were saying that he could handle the French-Canadian. Apparently those who talked that way hadn‘t seen Boucher in any real action. His last fight with Vince Cook of Halifax gave Boucher no chance to reallyshow his stuff. Cook made no fight of it whatever.

But Arsenault was no Vince Cook and the gamester from the western capital lost the fight but won himself a lot of friends. We didn’t figure he had won any of the eight rounds (we called it six for Boucher with two event but he made a fight of it all the way. Boucher got to Walter‘s nose early in the scrap and blood flowed freely during the latter part of the fight. It bother- ed ‘Pcanuts' to no end but he kept boring in. trying to land that one punch that he hoped would turn defeat into victory. Brun-o saw that it never happened and emerged a winner by a wide margin.

EVEN THE PRELIMINARIES were slugfests. so everything consiedered it indeed was a full evening. It was fitting that the final fight card was of such calibre. leaving everybody with a good tate their months. Ivan Dottterty tried hard to give pat, rons real value and he succeeded 100 per cent on Wednesday night.

WE HAVE NOTHING definite on what's taking place locally in hockey but we hear by the grapevine that there will be at least four teams in the Island Hockey League by next Monday night. Some are predicting that the number will be five and that of course. will be all the better, providing all teams are fairly even- ly manned.

Nobody will come right out and say anything positive because we gather that considerable jockeying is going on for players. Some mighty good perfonners are still undecided whom they will line up with, but by Monday night they'll have cast their lot.

The five—man steering committee is presently working on the problem of finding one or probably two sponsors before they re- pont back to next Monday's meeting. The outlook appears promis- ing and things should take definite shape at this next hockey session.

Last. Monday‘s get-together surely started things moving Thole had been nothing on the menu tip to that time and there were those who predicted no organized hockey for the 1958-59 sea- son. But Monday soon quieted those foolish rumors and right now we seem certain of plenty of action this coming winter.

Recently reporters got to asking Sully what were his ideas of a good manager. How should the boss man act with his plavers'.’ Solly didn’t hesitate but gave out with these thoughts. -
