Tue application by Mr. DeVeber for a recount of the votes taken at the election in St. John City was dismissed by Judge Watters, on the 26th inst. The election of Hon. 8. L. Tilley as the representative of the City of St. John in the Parliament of Canada is therefore confirmed.

Apminat INGLEFIELD entertained a large number of ladies and gentlemen of this city by a ‘‘bonnet-hop” on board the Belle- rophon yesterday. The ships left for Que- bec this morning, where they will remain till the arrival of the Marquis of Lorne. They will then return to Halifax, and after- wards to winter quarters in the West Indies.

THere was a long and somewhat bitter feeling in the discussion in the Montreal City Council on Mouday, upon the question of paying the volunteers for their services on the 12th of July. The bill sent in by Col. Fletcher was for $7,855.37, and was thrown out on motion by 12 yeas to 9 nays. All the French and Irish Catholics opposed the payment of the account, while the English members favored it. It is quite certain that the volunteers will have to look elsewhere than to the Montreal City Coun- cil for their pay. The troops were called out by six magistrates in opposition to the will of the Mayor and a full meeting of the magistrates of the district.

A MATCH race for a purse of $200 between Mr. Finlay MeNeill’s horse ‘* French Sporter,” of Summerside, and Mr. J. Ram- say's grey mare ‘* Pendleton’s Panacea,” of St. John, took place at Moosepath race course, St. John, on the 25th inst. The following is the result :—

WAS HE MURDERED OR KILLED BY THE

TRALN | FREDERICTON, Sept. 26,

A man named Edward Sweeney, unmar- ried, a resident near Enniskillen, Queen’s County, was found dead on the Railway track, this morning, east of Gaspereaux. The body was first reported by the freight tram, which saw the man, but could not

stop. When examined by the people on the next train, a two hours’ interval, he was

still and cold.

Mr. McLeod went out with the passenger train this morning, and had the body placed it Enneskillen Station. The place where

he was found was examined by Mr. McLeod,

Col. Maunsell, Robert Robinson, William Elder and others. There was no blood at the place. The man was lying on his face parallel with the rails, in the centre of the track. The back of his head was scratched, his clothes torn, and a brnise on his fore- head. He must either have been lying on the track and been run over, or killed pre- viously and placed on the track. His limbs were untouched.

There was an entertainment at Akerley’s, in Clarendon, the previous night, and Sweeney may have been there. There is a public house near the place. The matter requires investigation. ‘The body was not dragged by the train, but some pieces of his clothing were carried to a considerable dis- tance.--St. John Te leqgraph.

All articles for the Exhibition must be en tered and delivered at the Drill Shed, Sum- merside, on or before Tuesday, October Ist, or up to 9 o’clock the morning of the Exhibition, at which hour, sharp, the doors will be closed for the Judges to commence inspection. ‘The live stock must be entered and on the cattle grounds at 10 o’clock, a. m., on Wednesday, October 2nd, at which hour the Judges will commence Pusiness.

No prize will be awarded for farming im. plements until tested. All implements must be entered and on the trial grounds before 10 o'clock, a. m., on Thursday, October 3rd. All entries for plonghing match must be made and teams on the ground before 10 o'clock, a. m., Thursday, October 3rd.

Exhibitors are particularly requested to take notice that it is absolutely necessary, and posi- tively required, that all entries be made on or before the time above specified, in order to afford the Judges sufficient time for the dis charge of their duties.
