The sudden death of Herb Camp- bell in February was unexpected. although he had not been in extra good health for quite a long time. Hcrb's place of business was a rendezvous for horsemen for up- wards of 35 years and there the lmce horses, drivers and their per- llormanccs were thoroughly dis- lcussed. It was 9. most friendly spot Ennd made so by the genial re- -marks and careful handling of his .cusiomers by Herb. Herb had an oxcellent memory for horses and

their records and was often cp- ,pcaled to as an authority. He loved illorses nnd raced several during his career, the most notable being lthe dainty little ll-otter The Pup Q2.20!.. that won one of the most ;c-xcitlng races held at the Char- ilotictown track Exhibition of 1020. Mr lwnitc lived to n good old age and until incapacitated always attend- ed the nearby race meets and the Charlottetown Exhibition.

A widely known and very highly lhought. of horseman. Aubrey Bian- lchard Harvey, died early in June at Windsor, N. 8. During his life- time he owned such.good horses u Friar 2.0916, Billy P. G. Parker 2.1194 ,nlld various others. He took pleasure in exercising his horses and was in the act of hnmessing n. horse when he suffered a heart attack from which he failed to 1!- cover.

A horseman of the long ago, Al- fred Darby. formerly of Abrahunfs Village and latterly of Summer side. passed away there on June 26th. Looking over the old time records of the curly '1000'a we came across Mr. Derby's name very frequently. He had good horses and drove them himself. He was is successful former and highly thought of by everyone who knew him. He died at the' ripe age of 07, mourned by his family.and msny friends. His son, Hon. Wal- i.l-r E. Darby is our present Attor- ney General. '

Silver Fox and Mink Farming ,

Pelting foxes and mink also is pretty well over for this season. The mink will outnumber the fox-' es by about three to one, quite A difference from some years ago. Back in the '30's we can remember when this Island was producing between 30 and 40 thousand silver fox annually. Our own ranch was producing 1.500 to 1,600 foxes and Wilfred Lecky in later years raised 1,600 and over. Pelting foxes this year will be on B comparatively small scale. The estimate is not more than 3,000 and Wilfred Lecky's ranch and the McLure and MacKirlnon Silver Fox Farms will provide the bulk of these.

Those were great days. those days of old. when a fox farmer could figure on anywhere from several hundred to several thous- and dollars from his peltries. He could sell them to buyers here or he could ship through the con- signment houees and from them receive a large cash advance. The

Brotherhood of Locomotive Engin- eers and first became employed by the C.N.R. in 1900 as a locomotive engineer. On retirement he took up insurance. specializing in that for benefit of workmen. and set- tled in New Glasgow. An enthusi- astic horseman he was for years president of the Nova Scotia Rac- ing Association and of the Dudey Patch Club and a trustee of the Union Driving and Riding Club. We know of few men who could equal him as an after dinner speaker or as a presiding officer at a meeting. Kindly. courteous and gifted with words. he could away an audience to his ideas very easily. He will be greatly missed among horsemen whcreever they congregate. 0 O

In June there also passed away one of the greatest horse trainers and drivers the Maritimes ever produced-Fred Cameron of this city. who was a patient in the P. E. 1. Hospital at that time. He started training and driving horses at Charlottetown as a young man. racing them for such owners as Ollie Long and Hooper Home. In 1910 he went west and took al, position as trainer with the famous Hopper Stock Farm, Indianola, Indiana, the brood stallion at which form was Expedition, a son of Allerton 2.0lI'A, that C. W. Wil- liams had bred and raced together with Axtcll 3, 2.1216, both world's records when made. Fred had a steady position there and wm urg- ed to stay but love of home brought him back here in the fall of 1912. bringing with. him the blind four-year-old stallion Din- gain. This horse turned out to be a star performer, winning victories over the best pacers in the Mari- times at Halifax and Fredericton Exhibitions. He then went into the stable of Walter Cox where he took a record of 2.0614.

In his long career Fred trained and drove hundreds of horses but perhaps his greatest success in the Maritimes was with the pace: Fern Hal 2.0416, owned by Dr. D. H. M.cA1lister of Sussex, 11.3. For several years she dominated the free-for-ails. winning at Charlotte- town, Halifax. Fredericton. Chat- bun and sic in the state of Home. Another horse he had great success with was the pacer Bob Mac 2.1116 and the last horse we remember of him driving was Lusty Frisco 2.0'I',.'. owned by the late Charles Ohnndler. 2

The outlook was blue until 1924 when it suddenly changed and the Norwegian: came here in great numbers to buy live foxes and there were others too. Orders came from the United States, western Canada and vari- ous parts of Europe. Fox money was at one time said to total up to a million dollars annually and it could not have been very far from that figure.

It really put the Island on the map and that held up until 1089- 40 when there we: e. very big slump and fox pelts did not real- ize the cost of production. but there was a quick change about and fox pelts Jumped in prices with platinums bringing as high as 3220 and silvers over 5100. The year 1945 was one of the best and a few nights also looking over our sales figures received from the Canadian National Silver Fox Brcedcrs' Association we found that the platinum: averaged 3106 with 5220 as top, and silvers were sold at 550 and 560 readily. The only fly in the ointment then and during the war yours was the fact that we were a company and were allowed to have only about 24,000 as profits outside our salaries, which were the regular thing. The government took 100 per cent of the balance. After the war they returned 20 per cent and that is what has been keeping us going. together with the lower prices of fox pelts ever since.

Just what brought about the collapse of the fox business is dif- ficult to tell, but we attribute it largely to the bad judgment shown by Fromm Bros. in cutting out the retailer and the manufacturer and the consignment houses. Fromm's trying to do the whole thing them- selves and get all the profit, killed the goose that laid the golden egg. Mink breeders are not going to follow in their footstqps. They are taking care to merohendibe their pelts through the various consign- mcnt houses end these people are making a splendid job of handling them, but mink has got to such a stage and the production is so lal-ge,ihl1t it is neceseary to keep up 11 trenmcdous line of publicity Just how long it will hold the at- tention, of the public is problemat- ical but unless there is another fur to take its place. or unless the ladies go back to long-haired fun it seems good for several years.
