MISCELLANEOUS.

PETROLEUM AS FUEL.

| The experimenta which for several months have beet in progress at Boston, looking to the auc- cessful application of petroleum as fuel for stem | ships, have been watched with much interc t, and their results have been very ipertant. These | resnits, as claimed by the invenior of the eystem tader trial, are a saving of four or five to one in space required for the sterage of fuel, and + at) leest five-aixths of the labor required for feeding aud tending the fires, to say nothing of the actual cost, which depends upon the relative prices of coal aad cif. Application was made to the Seere- tary of the Navy, in Novembor last, for oppor tunity to test the practicability of petroleum as fue! spor a Government vessel. The Department had already, in 1862, appointed a committee of gaval engineers te experiment upen this sibject, and upon this appheatwoo a board of three chief engineers was ordered to examine the proposed eipertinents, the gunboat Palos being selected for the trial, Previous to entering upen the petro- feum trial, her engines were tested] wit! eval, thirty-six revolutions per winute, with a4 pounds of steam, being obtained. Iu the first petroleum teat thirty-four revolutions Were ob- tained with the sawe head of steam, and in the second test fifty revolutions with a pressure of thirty pounds. A comparison of the weight of the oi! aud the coal showed that one pound of oil had dene the werk of eight pounds of coal, and the general comparison of weight has shown one barre! of petroleum to be equal te one ton of coal

Crude vils are used of a gravity ranging from 31 tu 47 degeees. The oil is first conveyed directly te a cast-iron retort aud vaporized by means ef a slight fire vaderveath. Due proportions of steam) and cowuvn air are incorporated with the vapor, and the gasses thus evolved constitute the feel. This burne with 40 intense beat, and the combue- tiow is #0 perfect that no swoke is visible at the evutiet of the suwkestack.

The Gre te under perfect control, and there being nv ashes, clinker nor refuse coal to clog the fires, they way be run an indefinite time without stoppage tur cleaning. The buruing of eval upon the Palos required the services of twenty-one | firemen aod coalpassers; with the petroleum only three men were needed. This same principle may be applied tu locomutives as well as steamers, and, | indeed, upon the Franklin and Warren Railroad, in Western Pennsylvania, a petroleum burning | apparatus has been successtully employed. The | petreizum regions are waking still further use of | the oil by applying the wecesaary apparatus to the fires of the eugine houses at Cre wells, thus saving a very large outlay for wood or coal. During the | height of the speculative fever, when dv zens of wells were being sunk upon each acre in the} favorite localities, all the cual for the engines was | transported for wiles over trighttul roads ot great | wear acd tear of berses and waguns, and at a corresponding cost to the well owner. Under the directiva of his reverend superior, he would put up at a hotel, under a tsise name, tipple a | while at the bar, go out and take a drink ata salven, return and try a different kind of liquor, end when this amusemeut became tiresome report te beadqusrters. The “ specimens” which is secured io quantity, were handed over to Rev. Mr. Platt tor mince pies, probably. But most of the detective werk was done by personal drink- ing.
