Opening lead—five of hearts. A question frequently asked is: What is the most important sin- gle faculty required to become a good bridge palyer? And the an— swer is that the trait most needed to play the game well is the ability to avoid error.

We cite this deal as an exam— ple of how easy it is to go wrong in a given hand. The problem is how deciarer should play the hand against a heart lead. There are two pitfalls that need to be avoided if the con-tract is to be made. and both of them are of the type to which many players would fall victim.

The first important step is to win the opening heart lead with

rect. It is reasonable to assume West does not have K-Q-J of hearts, otherwise he would have opened the king. East thus be- comes marked with one of these honors. A block of the suit there- fore becomes a distinct possibil- ity. provided the ace is played at trick one.

The second step is to kill at once West’s only possible side entry—the ace of clubs. The ldng of diamonds. if West has it. is subject to later attack and can be captured in due time. but the ace of clubs is a thorn that must be immediately removed.
