Renewed nervousness over rumored reduction in the gold price disturbed foreign markets yester- day and liquidation carried over to tllcpNew York market, sending leading stocks into new low ground 0n the current move.

The statement by the President that the Government contemplat- ed no change in its gold policy l stemmed the selling and brought a 511311) rally. In recent years the wave oi {managed credit and curerncy sys- tems, established throughout the world has tended to make gold lose a large part of its former im- portance as the basis for national credit and currency while its use for the settlement of trade bai- ances among the various nations has been overshadowed by its use pile vehicle for the flight of cap-

We feel that the correction of the situation will require an in- ternational understanding among the leading capitalist nations as to the future role of gold in world finance and that it cannot be solved permanently by variations in the price of the metal.

It is obvious that this country cannot go on indefinitely as the sole mportant purchaser of gold and increasing the government debt to purchase it and prevent it from entering the govemment credit structure. One solution might be an agreement to limit purchases of the metal by all nations to the amount necemary to settle legiti- mate trade balances.

Except for some temporary un- settiement in world commodities and perhaps a lower world price for gold, we do not believe that any permanent harm would be done to lntematlonai trade and security or commodity values by the clarification of the future status of gold among the leading commercial nations.

(Canadian Press) MONTREAL, April 11—Bulter went to a new high for the season during the past week on Montreal open produce markets while eggs

- firmed.

Graded egg shipments in cariots or less were quoted at 21 1-2 to 22 cents a dozen for grade A large, 19 1-2 to 20 for A medium and 1B for A-puiiets.

Butter was quoted at 28 I-4 to 3-4 cents a pound for carlols or less of no 1 while lot" to retailers were 29 1-2 for solids and 30 for prints.

Cheese was quoted at 13 1-4 to 1-2 cents a pound for Omarios while Quebec's were unquoted.
