In consequence of certain reports, circulated by some ill-natured individuals, as to carelessness on my part, I have procured the following certificate; from which the public, I trust, will be able to form a correct judge- ment on the subject.

Charlottetown, Dec. 7, 1848.
This is to certify that on the twenty-ninth day of No- vember last, an investigation was held by the under- signed, as Justices of the Peace for Queen’s County, in- to the circumstances connected with the Fire which had occurred in Charlottetown onthe previous Sunday morn- ing, and had consumed the premises of John Scott, James W. Cairns, and several other persons; that every person who could be suppused to have any knowledge of the origin of the said Fire, was seperately and closely examined, upon Oath; that it appeared that all the workmen and apprentices connected with Mr. Scott’s Carriage Manufactory were in bed at a reasonable hour on the night of the previous Saturday ; that no careless- ness appeared to have been atiributable to Mr. Scott, but, on the contrary; that every necessary care and pre- caution appeared to have bee) exercised; and that no particular circumstence could with certainty be fixed upon as the cause of the said distressing calamity.

P- National Division, Sons of Temperance, having by virtue of the power vested in him, granted a Charter under the seal of the said National Division, organising a Grand Division, under the name of the “Granp Dy- vision of Prince Edward Island,” with full power to open Subordinate Divisions in the said Island. This si to give notice that the following is the Form of Appli- cation for a Charter to open a Division, and which must be signed by at least eight persons, who must e men of good standing in the community, and should be dj- rected to the Grand Scribe, free of postage.

ctfully petition the Grand Division of Prince Edward

to be called the Division, No. Sons of Temperance of the Island of Prince Edward, to be lo- cated in and under the jurisdiction of the said Grand Division.
We pledge ourselves individually and collectively, to be governed by the rules and usages of the said Grand Division, and also, by those of the National Di- vision.

Upon receiving the enclosed certificate I am direeted by the Grand Worthy Patriarch to state, that as soon as practicable, he will attend with the Grand Conductor, or will send a Deputy duly authorised, te open the Divi- sion.
As itis desirable that the principles of this truly noble and philanthrophic order should be diffused throughout the Island, it is to be hoped, that those per- sons who are in favour of Temperance would unite, so that Divisions may be established inevery settlement of the Colony. The leading principles of the Order are as fellows :—
J. A universa] Temperance reformation.
2. A Brotherhood, in Love, Purity and Fidelity.
3. The pecuniary relief of sick Brethren.
4. The encouragement of morality.
5. The diffusion of good will to all mankind.
Besides others equally exalted and ennobling.
The initiation fee to each Brother on opening Divi- ‘sion is twelve shillings, and which is retained in the Division, and from this fund the expenses for Uharter &c. are paid.
