London, July 5.—A large fire occurred to-day on the river front. Timber sheds and other buildings extending une hundred yards on the Russian. and Commercial | docks, and seven barges lying alongside the docks were burned. Loss, £60,000.

TROUBLE aT AN ICE CREAM PICNIC.

Adair, lowa, July 5.—-A hundred per-— sons were poisoned at an ice-cream picnic yesterday. The cream was made in new catis and it is supposed a formation of sul- phate of zinc caused the trouble. The vie- tims suffered terribly, but it is thought all but one or two will recover.

STRUCK BY LIGHTNING.

New Orleans, July 5.—John H. MeGin-, nis, of the firm of A. A. McGinnis & Son, : one of the largest mercantile and financia) houses in the city, was killed by lightning yesterday while swimming at his bath house. McGinnis married a daughter of William M. Tweed, of New York, the mar- riage being one of the grandest ever seen in that city.

Cuicaco, July 4 —Dr. O'Cleary, of the town of Lake, is one of the many men whom the anti-triangle wing of the Clan. na-Gael believe have been silenced forever by the Sullivan-Boland-Feely section. O’Cleary disappeared abou’ twelve months age.

To his friends his absence was unaccount- able, and but few even of the Cronin fac- tion of the Clan-na-Gael suspected foul play. Among these were D. J. Haggerty, to whom Alexander Sullivan had once smd that Cronin ought to be removed, and Col. Richard O'S. Bourke. O'Cleary returned from his last trip about 18 months ago, and is said to have been at that time in a state of absolute poverty. He made application for funds to the executive, but no attention was paidto him. ©’Cleary became denun- ciatory, and raised quite a row in the organ- ization over, his treatment. This fact ought to be known in counection with the murder of Dr, Cronin: He had a brother whose name is not Cronin, but Reeks, who is not Jrish but English. I am so ry to have to drag his name into such relation. He is, or was a few weeks ago, the Rev. Joseph Reeks, of St. George's Cathedral, Loadon. He was completely prostrated at the news of his Dr. Cronin has of late years made repeated secret visits to London and has always called on or stopped with his brother, Father Reeks. Investiga- tion of this statement will prove its truth.

Brakeman William Garvin was killed, but the engineers and firemen jump- ied, all ercaping with several injaries except the passenger engineer, who had three ribs broken. The engines were badly wrecked. .Ten thousand people were left at Twin | Springs with no train to come in on. The night being very cold, fences were torn down to make fires in order to keep them warm. TO START A FRANCO-IRISH REPUBLIC, Chicago, July 5.—A number of promin- ent Irish-Americans held a private meeting yesterday to discuss the advisability of es- tablishing au Irish-American Republic to further the interests of the Irish race. An organization was perfected to be knuwn as the Irish-American Republic Association, It is hoped to secure Lower California for the purpose of establishing a republic. ' Efforts will be made to secure this land | or a large tract of Canadian lands. Should | the Canadian land be secured an effort wil] | be made to colonize it with 1,000,000. Irish | |and Irish-American farmers. This number ' of Irishmen, with the addition of the Irish already in Canada, and the assistance of the French-Canadian element would, it is thought, be abie to capture the Canadian ee and cunvert it into a powerlul ‘ranco-Irish republic.

The full vote of the city fell short about 300. Last election there were about 1400 votes cast, but yesterday there were but 1126.
