The rest of the men were neighbors, good hcn- est men who knew better than to ask the same man twice for a chew of to- bacco without offering a return of the favor, who “belonged to church” and did not swear except under great provo- cation.
Midway in the meal Miss Sophronia looked up from her book.
“I'd offer to help you, Cissy, but you seem to be getting along better with- out me. “Too many cooks, you know, ‘spoil the broth.’ ”’
It would have done poor, tired Cissy good to hear the remarks of the men 4s they smoked their pipes under the oaks in the back yard.
“That settles it,” said one, “if I hear the women pokin’ any more jokes at Al’s wife, I'll shoot off suthin’ that'll settle ‘em. I hain’t met with such a dinner since my mammy’s day.”

Milles of Solid Ice Stretch Clear Across the Inlet.
The front of the glacier is about three miles wide, but the sheer middle, berg-producing portion that stretches across the inlet from side t» side, like a huge green and blue barrier, is only two miles wide, and its height above the water is from 250 to 300 feet. But soundings made by Captain Carroll show that 720 feet of the wall is below the surface, while a third unmeasured portion is buried beneath the mora n> detritus that is constantly deposited at the foot of it. Therefore, were the water and rocky detritus cleared away, a sheer precipice of ice would be present- ed nearly two miles long and more thin a thousand feet high. Scen from a dis- tance, as you come up the fiord, it seems comparatively regular in form, but it is far o -herwise ; bold, jagged capes jui forward into the fiord, alter- nating with deep re-entering angles and sharp, craggy hol‘ows with pan bastions, while the top is roughend with inuumer.bl> s:fres and pyramids and sharp, hacked blades leaning and toppling or cutting straight into the sky.—From the Century.
The Largest Forest on Earth.
At the recent congress for the ad- vancement of science In this country it was said that the largest forest in existence was nearly 700 mites north from the St. Lawrence, in the provinces ef Quebec and Ontario, and 1,800 mil s from east to west.
A recent French writer, commentirg on this, asserts that the Canadian for- eat is only entitled to the fourth plaice, if even that. In South America, he states, in the valley of the Amazon, is a stretch of woodland 2,200 miles long and 1,300 miles wide, while in the centre of Africa explorers have reported a forest at least 3,200 miles long from north to south and of a width as yet unanswered and untraversed, but cer- tainly vast in extent. This Afrcan forest, known as the “Great Forest,” is in all probability the largest area of wooded country in the world.
