A Few Words on Horses.

WAT CONSTITUTES A GOOD HORSE.

it cannot be doubted that it requires more than speed to make a desirable road hiorse. Soundness, endurance, 1n- telligunce good disposition, as well as beauty in form and gracefulness in action, are as necessary as speed. For turf purposes, speed and endurance are indispensable, and the least unsoundness will prove fatal. In order to survive throuch the severe ordeal of training, and the effects of a ‘long and arduots campaign, which calls for the utmost powers of the horse, there must be no soft, spongy bones and joints; no con- tracted feet ; no tendency to culsspavins or ringbones; no weak tendons or feeble lungs. No matter how much speed the horse may have shown, if they have proven in any way defective, he should be avoided. When trained for the track the least unsoundness will he speedily brought to the surface. Feet and legs, and bones and tendons, and joints and muscles, and heart and lungs and brain and eye must do its part thoroughly in a great horse, and there must be a firmness and a fineness of com- composition in the animal for him to withstand the tremendous strain that is placed upon him, It is this perfection which enables a horse to endure severe training year atter year, profitingby experience and improv- ing with age, that makes the valuable turf horse. It isa quality greater than speed, for whatever amount of speed the horse possesses, it can be depended upon and further improved. No blind devotion to a fashionable pedigree, nor mere pro- mise of speed in youngsters, should induce any person who is an admirer of a good horse to overlook a prevailing tendency to any unsoundness or lack of endurance.

How TO CHOOSE A HORSE,

‘The purchacers of horses for the French army always endeavor to obtain a first look at the animal when he is in the stable, noticing if the animal supports himse!f equally well on all his legs, and if one seems to yield, especially examin- ing it Attention isthen directed to the largness of the pupil of the eye, which ought to be more dilated when in the stable, the eye ought to be again examin- ed to see if the pupil has been contracted ; if not the sight is feeble. Others, to test the power of vision, feign to strike the forehead with the hand. If the hollow over the eye be profound and the temple gray old age is to beconchuded. Wounds about the temples suggest attacks of staggers, and when the end of the rose presents circular scars, it may be conclud. ed the horse has been twitched with a cord to insure his quietness while being sho@, or having had to submit to some painful operation.

WATERING HORSES.

Horses should be watered in the morn- ing before they are fed. A full drink of water immediately after being fed isa sure way of producing indigestion, if not inflammation. When water is drank by horses, the bulk of it goes directly to the large intestines, and little of it is retained in the stomach. Some old and worthless horses, by way of experiment, were fed with split peas, and then supplied with mater immediately before being killed. It wax found that the water had carried the peas from fifty to sixty feet into the intestines, where no digestion took place at all
