This singular being | was born on the JOth of January, 1850. She made her first communion,

at the age of eleven years, and began to earn her living as a seamstress at the age of fifteen. During the cholera visi-| tation of 1866 she exhibited much de- vyotion in attending to the wants of the pest stricken. In 1867, she was attack- ed by a lingering malady and received the last sacrament. She was, however cured (miraculously, said her friends), but oniy for a short time. Early in 1868 she was said to have first experienced pain in the locality of the | stigmata, and she again received the last sacrament. It is alleged, nevere theless, that she foretold her recovery, and on April 21, she appeared com- pletely restored to health. The first outward indication of the stigmata said to have taken place on April 24, 18638, when a wound inthe side was visible, which healed the next day, On May 1, blood was reported to have issued from the, upper surface of her feet as well as from her side, and she then confided the matter to. M. le Cure. Seven days later the stigmata of the hands added themselves to the Others, and M. je Cure advised her to apply to the physician of Fayt, who | attempted to cure ber. In the course of 1868 several evidences of ecstacy are said to have occurred, and on Sep- tember 25, 1868, the crown of thorns first appes ared. After this she ceased | tosleep, Her alleged complete abstin- ence from all nourishment began on! March 30, 1871, and the wound on the | shoulder appeared on the following April, The case attracted great atten- tention-at the hands of medical - meh; physiologists, ‘and psychologists, and bumeroas pamphlets appeared on. the subje CL.
