On Hallow-Eve the village boys still cause the streets and the highways to ring with unrestrained and boiste- rous mirth, while the gleesome noise of even the most rustic mnidens,with- in doors, over their swimming apples, or burning nuts, proclaims, that for that evening, labour has ceased to Oppress the children of'toil, and the cares oflife to annoy even the haunts of penury. Christmas has its athle- tic games for the robust peasant of the plain, and its relaxing festivities for the more delicate but not less toil-tired citizen of the town. ‘ But it is the season of spring which chiefly inspires joyousness. Easter- Monday has been for ages a day of rampant idleness, and forgetfulness of care, in which young hearts rejoice in unison with the dawn of nature; and the first of May, in the rural dis- tricts, throughout all Ireland,awakens a universal manifestation of delight in the advanced loveliness and geni- ality ofthe season, and. according to immemorial custom, calls forth the merry groupes, to gambols on the green, or dances round the Maypole. If, even in this age of economy, the calculators of the money-value of hours and minutes, have not been able very sensibly to diminish the ar- dour with which our younger classes rush from lab-our to enjoyment on those favourite holidays, it will be readily supposed that sixty years ago, when utilitarianism was in comparao tive infancy, they had done still less to check thejoyous cxcitements felt at those periods of annual pastime. It was on the first of May, 1778, that an assemblage of the younger and gayer classes of the population ofLarne and its vicinity, met‘in the field of Drumallis: nearthesea-coast, a short distance to the eastward of the town, in order, according to the ancient custom ofthe country, to ce- lebrate the day which their ancestors in the age of Druidism. had dedicated to the great luminary whose invigo- rating rays did then, as they do still, call forth the peculiar beauty, and

The field ot'Drumallis is situated in the centre ofone ofthe loveliest land- scapes in‘ nature. But I shall dcfer further notice ofit at present, that I may introduce to the reader an object still more lovely—the beautiful Rose Gilbert. She wasth only child “of a farmer in comfortable circumstances. Her mother had died in her infancy, and her father had remained a wi- dower, “ never,” as he often said, “ having seen the woman whom he thought worthy to fill the place of Ellen 'l'weed,” that having been the maiden name of his deceased wife.— The affections of John Gilbert, in- deed, after the death of his wife, he. came so entirely concentrated on his little Rose, that he could command none to place on any other object. 'l‘o nurse and watch over this beloved child, be employed a good-hearted, somewhat elderly maiden cousin,nam- ed Jenny Heddles, whom he placed over his household affairs, and whose managing and orderly house-wifery, and affectionate attention to Rose, were indeed such as to leave him no cause to wish for a connubial help- mate.

Jenny was, in truth, so doatingly fond of Rose, that she considered her safety and comfort as the most im- portant matters to be cared for in this world. Iflittle Rose cut her finger, or struck her head against a table, Jenny was in a bustle of consterna- tion for days together, and would for years make the time of the accident a date from which to calculate other occurrences. This over-fondness of father and nurse. was attended with indulgences which threatened to spoil both the tetnper and the constitution of Rose. But she possessed from nature a soundness of frame and a happiness of temper. which defied the enervating effects of pampering kind- ness, and prevented ever-ready com- pliances with childish wishes from engondering impatience or imperious- ness of mind. It is true that during her childhood and early girlhood, she was occasionally self-wrlled and stub- born, on which occasions, although her father would sometimes repri- mand her, Jenny Ileddles Would al- ways soothe her, and when practica-' lilo, would Comply with her wishes. When Rose. however, became able to bring reflection to the aid of her naturally good disposition. she saw the evils ot'indulging irritable feelings and the ungenerousness of giving pain to such a tender father and affection- ate nurse. It is true, that as she dawned into womanhood,some traces of her girlish self-willedness were stiii traceable in the vivacity, wildness, and fearlessness ofher manner,whicli, however,being regulated and restrain- ed by the dictates ofstrong good sense, never ran to excess, and instead of
