Upto the eud of March, ISS88, the editor-in-chief wrote or dictated an article weekly, and that in question was sent to me by the late editor, and as far as I know, was written or dictated by him.

of its intrinsic excellence, the ‘* May Queen” has long ago been in-) cluded amongst the classic, still the

simplicity of its numbers is most surpris- ing. It will, we are sure, receive a hearty welcome from the singers and instrument- alists of the Philharmonic Society; and, when the first concert is given, which will probab!y be early in September, the citi- zens of Charlottetown will have an oppor- tuuity of hearing, and we sincerely hope, enjoying, the exyuisite cantata, which has charmed everyone wherever it has been faithfully produced.

The Welsh tithe war is getting more and more bitter.

The London market is receiving favor- ably the £119,802 Toronto 4 per cent. ivcal improvement debentures, and there is every prospect that the issue will be a suc- cess. The minimum price is 1014.

Newfoundland’s luck is gocd this year. The treasury has a surplus; the cod fishery prospects are good, and her ships have just come in, after a fortnight’s cruise, with a million dollars worth of seal fat in their holds,

It is in contemplation by the military authorities to issue a quantity of carbine ammunition for the use of volunteer corps. This will be apportioued to recruits when they first commence to shoot, the idea_be- ing to overcome the natural dread of the Murtini’s recvil, which all recruits at first have. A large percentage of young volun- teers, after their first experience, never at- tend the rifle range a second time, and it is with a view to overcome this difficuity that the experiment is about to be tried.

The Post's London special says : There is some question whether the Times will be able to survive the consequences of the of the Parnell case. Not one of the Times’ counsel has yet received a penny in fees; only the expenses of the witnesses having been paid. The explanation is that the Times entered upon the commission busi- ness confident of an ultimate grant from the Government. The collapse of the letters alters the situation, and a grant is out of the question. The Times, therefore. has to meet an unexpected expenditure of £50,000 of law expenses, plus another £50,- 000 for libels. Mr. Walter isa very rich man, and he mvy come to the rescue of his fellow proprietors, but the position of the Times is threavened.

Mr. Richards asked the Commissioner of Public Works what action the Government intend taking with respect to the opening of the road from the Boulter’s Road to Buchaann Road; also what action the Govern- ment intend taking respecting the opening of aroad from Victoria West, Lot 13, to the Main Western Road. The tirst-named road is partly opened, and more money will be expended upon it this year. In re- spect to the other, the right of way has not yet been secured.

House went into Committee to take into consideration all matters relatingto paupers, and reported a number of resolutions agreed to.

The Appropriation Act was read a third time and passed.

Hen. Mr. Sullivan submitted an account of Dr. MeNeill, asked for by Mr. Suther- land, for services to smallpox patients, in Rustico and New London, for $1,200—to- gether with correspondence in connection therewith and vouchers showing that the Government had paid Dr. McNeill $715.46. Mr. Sullivan said this was at the rate of $15 a day for 41 days to the doctor, and also payment in full for all medicines used. The doctors, he said, were all treated as nearly alike as possible; and the Gov- ernment bave decided not to pay one single dollar more to Doctor McNeill. It was, he said, extraordinary that while this claim of $1200 was being pressed against the Government, Dr. McNeill entered suits in the Supreme Court against the Boards of Health at Rustico and New London to en- force payment for his services.

A Diphtheria Scare. There is no doubt but that diphtheria in its worst form is very prevalent in many cities and small towns. At the same time; that fact is no reason for frightening people out of their wits, with every new case of sore throat. Even ulcerated sore throat is bad enough, and no person would have that for fun. Yet hun- dreds of persons are said to haye had diph theria who only bad a severe sore throat. The form of sore throat which often passes for diphtheretic is what old people call quinsy. ‘**Putrid sore throat,” known long before diphtheria, was probably a form of diphtheria, aud very dangerous. Anold hospital nurse in Boston says: ‘‘Itain’t the clear cold of winter that lays people up with colds, catarrh,*and sore throats, and lays the child- ren low with diphtheria; its the soft, pleasant, alternating with the wet slushy days.” This is very true, and explains why those troubles ave so prevalent this unusually soft rainy winter; the air, in fact, is laden with poisonous vapors, The first sympthoms of true diph- theria are much like those of a heavy cold ‘on the lungs. There is fever, some stupor, and difficulty in breathing. Very sharp pains are otten felt in the neck glands, just below the ear. The tongue is coated, the throat and tonsils inflamed, little white spots, which in- crease and turn toa dirty yellow or brown color next appear, and a peculiar odor totally unlike ulcerated sore throatisnoticeable. If the disease is of the black or malignant type nothing but a miracle can restore the patients to their former good health, Very many re- liabie people claim to have cured severe cases of diphtheria with Johnson’s Anodyne Liniment. Be that as it may, it is worth try- ing, because so easily used internally, dropped on sugar or as a gargle, and bathing for ex- ternal use. We know from experience that it will cure a common sore throat in one night, and thousands of people claim that no remedy known will relieve colds, catarrh, bronchitis, croup, etc,, as promptly as the good old Johnson's Liniment.
