LONDON, Nov. 22 On the 14th of October last, a man named Brookshaw, a commercial traveller was cotamitted for trial in this city for sending a threatening letter to Colonel Teesdale, Equerry to the Prince of Wales, in which he stated that it was his intention to] murder the Prince of Wales unless a certain sum of money which he dem sanded was iin- | mediately sent tohim. The line ef defence | taken by Brookshaw’s Counsel in the trial ended yesterday, was, that he (Brookshaw) isacrank. But the evidence for the prose- cution proved him to be a professivnal blackmailer. The Court therefore sen- tenced him to tien years penal servitude i

The remaining four prisoners at the con- | clusion of Patrick Casey’s trial were ar- raigned for complicity in the Joyce murder. They all pleaded guilty and were sentenced to death. The sentence was a great dis- appointment to them, as they thought by pleading guilty to the charge of complicity they would be sentenced to life long servi- tude instead of hanging.

Lonpown, Nov. 19.

Yesterday business was in great part sus pended in London. In the morning there was a fog, which was a prohibition upon or- dinary traffic, and the rest of the day was given to the review of the Egyptian troops by Her Majesty. The weatner cleared, as it is held that it always does for the Queen, and by one o'clock a large proportion of London’s five millions had poured into St. James’ Park and filled every approach to it. Not ten per cent. of the enormous multitude saw the pageant, which was one of extraordinary brilliancy. The royal family was out in full force. Her Majesty was very plainly dressed, looked very weil and was guarded from the view of her faith- ful subjects by innumerable soldiery. The Prinee of Wales was hardly more visible, and the immense royal establishment, with all its apparatus, carriages and upholstery, presented a very curious spectacle. The event filled London with excitement, and was eminently successful in its design, which was to let the Egyptian heroes in the sunshine of the royal presence to stimulate the national military feeling to show to the public of what it is paying so much money for. The Indian officers and men, in their grotesque uniforms, came in for applause, andlooked deeply impressed and wretchedly cold.

The World’s London Special says: The chief feature of the review was the huge crowd—such a crowd asis only to be seeu in London on a holiday; and I must chronicle the remarkabl enthusiasm meni, fested yesterday everywhere by all classes. In the Commons, to-night, Mr. Gladatone in reply to Mr. Parnell, stated that the Government was not at present contemplat- ing any amendment to the Arrears Rent Act. Mr. Trevelyan said up to the 15th inst., applications under the Arrears Rent Act had reached 141,670; the land com- missioners hoped to settle, before the 30th inst., all cases lodged prior to Nov. 25th.

The condition of the Archbishop of Can- terbury is regarded by his physicians with increased anxiety.

Gvayanguit, Nov. 20.

A fearful explosion occurred, this after- noon, at a powder magazine half mile north of this city. It is reported that ten per- sons are killed. The shock was terrific, destroying a church and several houses near the magazine. The cause of the explosion is unknown.

According to advices from Ecuador re- ceived to-day the Government forces have won a battle at Chambo, a small village 120 miles north of Guayaquil. The Presiicnt has ordered six days’ mourning for the soldiers of the Government killed in the engagement. No details received.

[Lord Harrowby was well known as a philanthrepist and supporter of religious societies and charitable institutions. He was 84 years old. During the greater part of his hfe he was engaged in public affairs. He sat in the house of Commons from 1819 to 1847, and he held office under the ad- ministrations of Earl Grey and Lord Palmerston. He obtained the blue riband of the Garter in 1859. |
