Babies Placed by Mail.

Probably the most unique mail order busines is the doling out of i babies. The American Home Find- ing Association, of Chicago, makes it a business to get track of children that are left overs, and conducts extensive correspondence around the country to place the “kids” in homes. No news- paper advertising is done, but nicely printed circulars showing half—tones of pretty babies, are mailed out in ten thousand lots, mostly to married people who are childless, the names being secured by correspondence with clergy- men and others. The printed matter is so attractive and the half-tone cuts so nice that hardly any one needing a baby can resist the temptation of or- dering one, especially as no money is asked. The scheme has been in oper- ation some two years, and Mr. Hoover the superintendent, tells us itis a suc— cess. The past year the association has by mail placed an average of one baby per working day.—Mail--Order News.

Our Manners at Table.

How often a good dinner is made less enjoyable by the bad manners of one sitting next you at table. I don’t reter to that class of people who have nothing else to do but dress and act nice on all cccasions, or what may be called the cultured class o; people, but [ mean the farmer folks and common working people. Because a man or woman works hard from morn till night is no reason why he or she should not have as good manners as any others. But the fact we come in contact with some, especially among those get- ting up in years, who ignore all rules of this sort and seem to take pride in calling it upishnesss, and putting on of style in others, while they never seem to think or care that their noise in eating or drinking is very disagree able, even annoying, to others. We may excuse an old person for putting his knife in the mouth, and then help- ing himself to butter with it, though I fail to see why even an old person can- not see that such practices are not agreeable to others at the same table. I don’t believe in too much ceremony and style for plain people, yet even the plainest of us can have manners that are simple anc at the same time good.

But while we overlook such faults in the older people, there is no excuse for the young folks. Self respect, and consideration for others, ought to make them quick to learn. In the case of young children, the parents are respon- sible, more especially the mother, if she allows them to do as they please, eating and drinking like little pigs. She is committing an offence against others, and an injury to the child. Home is the place fora child to be trained in all these little things. If the chitd is allowed to eat with the knife nearly down its throat, smacks the lips, helps itself to what suits, it’s ro won- der if such habits cling after it has cut- grown knee pants.
