Carr. Lornway, of the cruiser Triumph, is at present stationed at Souris looking after the Americans. Large numbers of them have been in and around that part of the country for the last fortnight or more. On Sunday morning they seemed inclined to weigh anchor and clear out. Sunday is a favorite day for fishing with the Americans. But even the desire to get fish on that day failed to start them all out from Souria. A-few still remain there. It surely cannot be that the Scott Act temptations of the town keep them hovering around the eastern metropolis ?

Mackeret. is now selling along shore at $i0.50 a barrel. The hook and liners or sheremen are catching a few, while the seiners are doing nothing. In conversation with an American skipper yesterday, he complained hitterly about hard luck this year, declaring that seven out of every ten vessels in the Bay have not caught enough mackerel to pay

the fare of the crew home by steamer or rail- way. Many of the American crews are al- reads trying to get home as passengers in

other vessels, having abandoned all hopes of catching mackerel this season. —_— ——-_-— —

MaTTHew ARNOLD has expressed the opin- ion that the greatest weakness of America arises from want of reverence on the part of the people. If the philosopher-poet had been ere yesterday, we fear that he would have boen deeply shocked by the exhibition of weakness atforded at the People’s Cemetery by the people of Charlottetown. The con- duct of the crowd at the grave of Midshipman Watsoa seemed to show that we have no reverence for either the living orthe dead. Atany rate, it was very rude to press so closely about the place of interment that many of the stranger mourners could not reach it,—not to speak of trampling, like so many cattle, over the new-made graves. Davitt Speaks.

Dustin, Aug. 28. Michael” Davitt addressed the Branch League to-day. He said the only crime prevalent in Ireland was_ eviction. If England imprisoned men for resisting the injustice 6f landlordism by exereising the night of free speech, the country would be steeped to the lips in crime. During the coming winter they would continue to b ycott sneaking thieves and land grabbers, but before two years the necessity for agitation and boycotting would be over.

Lonpon, Aug. 26. Zanzibar despatches state that messen- gers from Uganda report that the mission- ary MacKay has obtained permission of King Mevanga to refarn to the coast. The reports are that Emin Bey is well and is still holding out. King Mevanga has
