official, “I had an interesting talk with an old friend of mine who is in the se- cret service and who was there on spe- cial detail to look after some of the dis- tinguished guests. Just how many gov- ernment detectives were on hand no- body knows except Chief Wilkie, and he isn’t apt to tell, but there were enough to put a very prompt quietus on any crank or indiscreet enthusiast who might have been inclined to make things unpleasant.

“It seems that Dewey had a particu- lar dread of being kissed. He probably remembered how poor Hobson had been osculated into obscurity, and the

first thing he asked of the members of the arrangement committee who

boarded the Olympia in the bay was that all females who looked as if they had intentions should be kept at a distance.
