When I read a newspa- per I expect to find infor- mata- tive advertisements, inter- esting columns and comical comics. The Gem has these

four letter word appeared —— even once in the form

of a “joke”. If the mental- ity of the authors responsi- ble for the articles has not yet reached a mature stage I suggest they refrain from writing articles fora public

- publication. I would like to

think that as university stu- dents, our vocabulary has

reached a degree where we

can express ourselves with- out reverting to such igno- rant grammar.

I agree that the illus- tration that: appeared on page 3 was much too direct. It was. reprinted from.’The Peak’, the student newspa- per at Simon Fraser whiver- sity and if was included be- cause it tied in with what was raised elsewhere in the issue. It was a hasty desci- sion on my part, and I agree that it should not have been printed. However, the ar- ticle on assault. which was printed by student news- papers all across Canada. used the words it did to express the coarse attitude some men still have towards women. I did not edit the article because I felt it ex- pressed the extent of that coarseness better than any words that could have been substituted.

The Gem always tries to print material relevant to students at UPEI, no mat- ter what issues the mate- rial is about. The articles on sexual. assault, censor- ship, a university harass- ment policy, and an at- tempt to include the pill with student health fees were all relevant, and issues I think students here are concerned about.
