_'l‘lie taxpayer interested in the manner in which the CAMPBELL Government is implement- ing ats “economy” pledges these days should make it a point to visit the Provincial Building. The wliolc- building is being gutted and re. (‘Obstructed 0n a scale t0 stagger all belief, From basement to attic there is scarcely a square inch 0f the old interior left to offend the lavish a-nd luxurious tastes of the dictators now in control of the provincial purse-strings. ..

Somewhere in the midst of‘the debris the visiting taxpayer is likely, during office hours. to encounter the stalwart figure of the Acting Premier and Iifiiiister of Public \Vorks. Mr. hlclnrvitiz. Mr. hlOlNTYRE is about the only government member visible to the naked eye amid the piled-up furniture and office equip- ment. and the confusion of scaffoldings, step- ladders, paint-pots and plaster-puddles.

In Mr. hfclivrvizifs eye the visiting tax- payer, if he approaches, will note a triumphant glint; on his countenancb an expression 0f su- prenie self-satisfacti0ii_ It is plain that he is in his element,’ like TOSCANINI conducting a _BEETHOVEN symphony. \

If the taxpayer is tactful, he may even in- duce Mr. M ClNTYRE to conduct him through the ivreckage, and have described for him, in daz- zling detail, the gargantuan plans of the coni- pleted structure, and the oriental splendours of the furnishings and fittings yet to be installed.

It will be a marvellous experience for the taxpayer-like getting a glimpse of the pleasure dome of Kubla Khan, or the Taj lVfahal, in process of construction.

He will go home dazed, wondering what it is all about, and asking himself where 011 earth the money is coming from and hovy any govern- ment with such fantastically extravagant notions evcr had the gall to appeal to the electors on a platform of balanced budgets.

Fa rm Implement Prices

During the federal election campaign it was repeatedly alleged by Liberal speakers and in the..Liberal press that the BENNETT tariff poli- cies had raised the price of farm implements. Figures were published in The GUARDIAN at the time to show that this statement was absolutely incorrect, the truth being that under Conserva- tive administration farm implement prices had been materially reduced. However, the Liberal campaign statements were accepted, together

‘v with assurance that Liberal policies would mean CilJLlpCf farm machinery, and the sweeping tariff CulXCCSSlOIIS made by Mr_ KiNo in signing the ‘Mighiiigton treaty were hailed by Liberal sup- porters as bound to result in immediate rcdiic- tion of farm implement prices. .

The result, unfortunately, has been far otherwise. Last Monday in the House of Coni- mons Mr. j. F. JOHNSTON, Liberal member for Lake Centre, moved a resolution to hold au ini- mediate inquiry into “the causes underlying the high price of farm implements with particular reference to the advance in prices for the year 1936." He cited the Winnipeg price lists of the Cockshutt Plow Company, the Massey-Harris, Company, and the International Harvester Company of Canada for binders, disc drills, disc harrows, gang plows and other farm implements. The figures cited were for the years 1930, 1934. i935 and 1936 respectively; they showed, in ucarly every case, a reduction in 1934 and i935, and a sharp increase in I936, under the present tariff reductions.

Mr. Thioiiirsonwfs statements were corrobor- ated by Hon. j. G. GARDiNl-LR, Minister of Agri- culture, wlio cited the St. Thomas, Ontario, price lists which lie found “compare almost exactly, so far as increases are concerned, with price lists from Western Canada which have bccii read in the House." According to Mr. Cincinnati's lists, “a six-foot binder sold in St. Thomas in i935 for $225.50; but in the list wlllCll has been recently put forward for i936 the cash price is 242.20, which is practically $17 higher than the 1935 price_ A six-foot mower sold in 1935, cash price at $84, and in 1936 it sold at $92, 0r an increase of $8. A side-delivery rake sold in i935 at $118 and in i936 at $128, or an increase of $10.
