The New York Election and the Erie Canal.

In the elections in New York State in November next the constitutional, amend- ‘ment making the Erie Canal a free water

| highway will be submitted to the people.

The gubernatorial candidates favor. the proposition, and a large vote, if not am actual majority, is expected to be recorded in its favor. Mr. Franklin Edison; the President of the Free Canal Union, states the situation in these terms :—‘‘T feel

sure thet the canai has got to be made free or abandoned. It is not any contest between the railroads and the canal, but the issue |has narrowed down to this. Cam New | York -hold its commercial position against the free Mississippi River and the practically free St. Lawrence ! It is one thing or the other. A vote against free canals is a vote in favor of permit tingCanada to do the carrying trade of the Northwest. And then, besides that, it is not a contest between the people of |New York as to free canals, but between ithe people of this State and the people of Canada on one side and the people of Pen- sylvania and Maryland on the other side. If the State of New York abandons its ‘canal, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and Montreal will be enormously benefitted, because we are then placed on an equal fvoting with them. I believe that the peo- ple of the Northwest are gainers by having New York handie the bulk of their pro- ducts, beeause this is the best and most convenient of all routes. — Montreal Gakette.

The rind of a lemon is recommended by a noted cock as giving a delicate flavor toy tomato catsup. It should not be put in until the catsup is done and is cool. Cut it in sinall pieces.

Corn starch makes the best paste fcr scrap books. Dissolveasmall quantity in cold water, then covk it thoroughly. Be careful not to get it too thick. Whea cold it should be thin enough to apply with abrush. It will nct mould nor stain the
