The Great Storm.

Boston, Jan. 27.

The great storm has extended as far south as Maryland, where the snow drifted 58 to 10 feet deep, blockaking many rail ways. The storm is still raging throughout New York State. The roads in the northern parts of the State are still snowbound The great trunk lines. are struggling to move trains at great disadvantage. The freight blockade is the greatest ever known. The New England blockade still continues on most roads. The snow all over New Eng- land and the Middle States is two feet leep onthe level. Drifts are 8 to 15 feet deep. Scores of trains are countermanded.

Interesting Developments Ex- pected, MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 27.

A Winnipeg special to the Journal says : Experts have been put to work to examine into the province's accounts, and some in- teresting developments are expected. There is a deficit of $300,000, much of which the members of the late Government account for in connection with the fight with the Dominion Government on the railroad question. The books were kept in very bad shape, and it is difficult to say how things really stand. :

a The Closing of Stores. Toronto, Jan. 27

In the Legislature to-day Hon. Mr. Fraser Minister of Public Works, introduced a bill to regulate the closing of retail shops and hours of labor therein for young persons. Theg bill provides that any municipality may,on petition from three fourths of those interested pass a bye law defining the hours for closing any particular class or all classes of retail shops within its borders, it also limits the number of hours per week, which persons under sixteen shall be com- pelled to work.

Mysrexious S#ootivc.—On Saturday night last, John Calder, a Theological student at Pime Hill College, Halifax, was returning to college when le was fired upon by some unknown party. Three shots were fired, the first striking him in the hip, the other two missing. The heavy clothing worn by Mr. Calder saved his life, the bullet only making a flesh wound.
