Forest fires had been raging in the moun- tains for more toan a month. The passea- gers were peering from the car windows, watching the red lights leap from tree to

hills a bleak and blackened waste.

The traveling passenger agent had held the platform all the way up the mountain, soothing her fears and showing her the sights and scenes along theline. ‘‘Over there,” he said, ‘‘is the sunny San Luis Valley, and those high hills—that snowy range, when seen in the golden glow of sunset—was called by the Spaniards San- grie de Christo, the blood of Christ. Far- ther tothe south and a little west is the great silver canp of Creede, where it is always alternoon,

‘Looking far down the vale you can see the moon-kissed crest of the Spanish range, below whoee lofty peaks the archaic cliff-dwellers had their homes. Here to the north, where you see the fire flying from the throbbing throat of « locomotive, is the line that leads to Leadvilie, whose wondrous wealth is known to all the Eng: lish-speaking people: yes, even as far south as Texas they have come to talk of Leadville and the mines.

‘Ob, yes, I have seen it!” chimed in the maiden. ‘‘It’s by Ernest lngersoll, is it not?”

“No,” he replied, ‘‘this one is by the Builder of the universe, and, as 1 was about to say, the water flows this way to the Atlantic, and that way to the Pacific Ocean.”

The engineer reached for the rope, and the long, low ‘‘toooo toooo-too toot” went out upon the midnighi air, and the women folks whispered a little prayer for the weary watcher in the engine cab, placed their precious lives in his left hand and went to sleep again. The long train creaked aud cracked on the sharp corners, and as the last echo of the steam whistle died away in the distant hills, slid swiftly from the short tangent and was swallowed up by a snowshed,

it had required the united efforts of three locomotives to haul the train up the hill, and the engineer knew that to stop was to perish in the fire, as he was utterly nuable to back out of the burning build- ing.

That is why it appeared to the passeng ers that all at once every tie that bound this human-burdened train to the track parted, and the mad train began to fall down the mountain. Away they went like the wind. On they went through the fiery furnace like a frightened spirit flying from the hearth of hell. The engine men were almost suffocated in the cab, while the paint was peeled from the Pullman car as a light snow is swallowed by the burning sun en 4 sandy desert.

At last tue light is gone, they dash out into the night—out into the pure moun- tain air; the brakes re applied, the speed is slackened, the women are still frighten- ed, but the conductor agsures them that the danger is past.

Now they can look back and see the burning sheds falling. The ‘‘schoolmarm ” shudders as she climbs back to her berth, andan hour later they are ail asleep. At Gunnison they get another locomotive, s fresh crew, and the train winds on toward the Pacific slope.

The evyine is stabled in her stall at the roundhouse. The driver walks abovt her, pats her on the neck, and talks to her as he wou.d to a human being: ‘* Well, old girl, we got through, didn’t we? But it was a close call.”—Cy Warman, in Buffalo Express,

Only Rich Men Can Be British Officers.

What the demands upon the private means of a cavalry offieer really amount to was strikingly shown the other day by an article in the Army and Navy Gazette. The initial outlay was here put at nine hundred pounds sterling and the annual expenditure at eeven hundred pounds sterling, and these totals were supported by full details of regimental and personal expenses. Who can wonder that almost every Gazette tells the tale of young cavalry officers cutting the service, regard- less of the money they have sunk, as soon as they realize what the position means; or that the difficulty of keeping up the supply of officers is constantly increasing, notwithstanding the fact that the entrance standard for the cavalry is now below that of any other branch of the army? Unless it is desired that the British cavalry shall eventually be officered exclusively by the class which has money and no brains, some drastic measures will need to be taken without delay to curtail the demands on cavalry officers purses.

Women in New Zealand.

A recent letter from New Zealand says: *'T have traveled in many countries, but in no other land have I seen the courtesy and unobtrusive chivalry exhibited to women, whether young or old, by New Zealand young men of every condition and rank. The status of a New Zealand woman is considerably higher than that of her sister in Australia or Engiand.”

LETTERS 10 THE EDITOR.

A SMILE FOR THE HUSBAND, Sir,.—We often see items headed thus in our papers. Now a change is good; let it be a “smile for the wife.” Men come home tired, it is true, swallow their meals with- out hardly ever one word to that loving wife who is expected to meet them at the door with a smile. Often the simile that greets her is “hurry up the dinner now, I have not a minute to Jose,” when he could spend ten minutes at least and never miss it, and it would repay that wife for all her trouble. Oh, husband, in the hustle and bustle stop and think that“ those loving hands may be still and cold, and you will beat your breast for not bestowing a few more caresses, a few more acknowledg- ments on that wife who lives ten years in your five. Just think of the different life. You are in the workshop, in the steam- boat, or in the store. Think of the changes that take place in your work, and contrast the monotonous life of the home, with the very same work day after day and week after week, worried and bothered with her darlings, making, mending and turning and twistiog things inside out and upside down. Oh, husband, pause and think, and you will soon find out what | as taken the color from the cheek and the lustre from the eye. Just bestow a few of those caresses that you should have kept, and see how the eye will brighten and the step will quicken. Do not say, if you think the face is clouded or a tear trembl- ing in the eye, “‘out of temper again.” She is not “out of temper,” but it is your un- loving attitude that cuts to the core and seems to freeze to death all the love of long ago. I mean the true wife now, the woman who you cannot enter her house but everything shows her handiwork. I do not mean the woman who tramps the streets six days out of six and ahalf, whose husband ought to be billed for sidewalks, and who will visit every store in town to get dress goods and millinery to suit her. They do not deserve a smile fvom the hus- band, nor do they want; it is the strangers’ smile they desire. Oh, husband, do not, as you often have in the past, have Smiles for the stranger, ! Smiles for the welcome guest; But for your own the bitter tone, Though you love ycur own the best.

a small portion of the broken pencil was seen, and much the larger part had dis- appeared. It was observed that she had

a slight cut on Ler right cheek bolow the eye, the ball of which was somewhat mis-

laced or forced upwards. Dr. F. 8. eeiate was summoned, and on examin- ation, placed the child under the influence of ether, made an incision below the eye and with much _ ifficulty extracted the missing piece of pencil 2} inches long, which in the child’s fall had struck her cheek glanced upwards, entered the socket below the eye penetrating its entire length. The Board of Health, of Orange, New Jersey, seems determined to revive the blue jaws of Connecticut within its jurir- diction. It has begun by prohibiting the innocent and somewhat amusing practice of kissing within the limits of its juris- dietion, and by regulating the length of dresses worn by ladies thereof. The Orange Board of Health attempts to justify these arbitrary regulations by the pre- tense that they are necessary for the de- fence of the public against the ferocious bacillus. Kissing leads to diphtheria, in the view of health boards, and sweeping trains convey tramp bacilli from the streets into the homes of the people. The prohibition of kissing is an interference with an inalienable natural right. The regulation ef the length of skirts is a sumptuary edict, repugnant to the spirit of free institutions. It is not likely the people will submit fora moment to this nonsensical tyranny.
