The horse ran away, and after turning about once or twice ran headiong into a large hole in the ice between the two wharves and disappeared from sight sleigh and all, Yesterday Mr. Stanley and some friends drove to Mount Stewart but could get no trace of the missing horse. Mr. Stanley values the horse and sleigh at about $135.

A Priest Given Two Days to Reflect, Montrreat, March 13.—Rev. Mr. Da- bue, assistant priest at St. Vincent de Paul, refused to answer a question in the witness box, and Judge Tait gave him two days to reflect, saying that he would have to answer or go to jail for contempt of court.
Fire Losses During February, New York, March 13.—The Journal of Commerce and Commercial Bulletin says that the fire loss of the United States and Canada darisg February shows a total of $9,730,100, as compared with $11,297,600 in February, 1894, and $12,360,200 in February.

Saw Francisco, Mareh 13.—Eight hun dred painters are out on strike. They want an increase of 50 cents a day, mak- ing their wages $3 instead of $2.50. Cuicaco, March 13.—All the union tailors employed in this city went on strike to day to assist the clothing cutters and trimmers who have been struggling for several weeks. In less than a week it is estimated that 25,000 to 50,000 men, women, boys and girls, whose garment work depends on the tailors, cutters and trimmers will be affected,

Bosronx, Mass., March 13.—A. hand- some six-story brick building on Colum- bus Avepue occupied by the Pope Manu- facturing Co., bicycle manufacturers, was badly damaged by fire yesterday afternoon, the joss being nearly $250,000. When the fire broke out some 35 employes were in the building, and several had diffi culty in getting out. The less is said to be fully covered by insurance. There were some 1,700 bicycles, 5,000 tires, 175 second hand wheels and 20,000 pieces of mach- inery in the building which were all des- troyed.

On February 25th the governor sent another despatch saying the Island was more quiet than at the time of his previous despatch, and no donbt the presence of a British warship wonld prevent a recurence of disorders. Mr. Chamberlain said there was no truths inthe report of the intended arrest of Cecil Rhodes by the authorities of Cape Colony, nor had he information that any other authorities contemplated such action.
