A person can hardly apprec- iate any real value until he has had at least some actual exper Ience of it. The most complete description of an apple‘s taste won't make anyone hanker for apples one-tenth as much ss even a single bite.

_ To appreciate spiritual values (which all boil down to God (1 limately) is very difficult for us unless and until we get some ex- perimental knowledge to go by.

The joy and the satisfaction found in real prayer. the streng- th born of humble resignation in trials; the exultation of self-sac- rifice for love —- these are some examples of what I mean.

PRAYER

Until a person has tried to pray. indeed until he has suc- ceeded in encountering God in prayer (mysterious as this en‘ counter is), he cannot reaiiy know what prayer is

Until he has really experienc- ed the strength God gives us as we endure life‘s trials, he can-

not really know how much God h

loves us.

Until he has denied himself, sacrificing his desires and his plans for the sake of someone else, he cannor understand the trr-th of Christ's paradoxical tea- ching. “If anyone wishes to come after Me let him deny him- self and take up his cross and follow Me. For he who would save his life will lose it; but he . who loses his life for My sake will find ll.” EXAMPLE

One of the key problems with regard to gaining this vital ex- perience is t get a man to make the first step, to dare the

firsr experience with nothing much to go on but God’s word and our encouragement.

If he can just succeed in elic- iting even once some major act of generosity. the battle will be half won. But rarely will our en- couragement take the form of lecturing him or worse still. of badgering him.

It is the example of our lives that will provide him with en- couragement he needs. Only the evident vitality of our faith will help him.

CHOICE

Faith is a‘ gift, freely given. it must be freely accepted. God made us in His image and like-

ness. We must have faith in the th

goodness of God's creation.

The danger of abuse of our freedom in the goodness 0' God‘s creation.

The danger of abuse of our freedom must never lead us to stifle that freedom in the inter ests of serving od.

We must do things... Christ 5 way. that is endeavor to induce people to goodness that choice as produced in our own lives. Perhaps the effort to convert people to Christ through pres- sure tactics is indicative of our own failure to freely “taste and see that the Lord is sweet.

The fundamental choice he must make is whether or not he will let God be a Father to him. No one can make this choice for

OUR lesson today opens with the first chapter of Deuteron omy in which Moses begins his summation of the trials and tri- bulations which have afflicted Israel since she began the exo- dus from Egypt.

minds the people of God’s pro- mises that everyting will no theirs if they only believe and o y Him. All their afflictions thus far have come as a result of their increduliiy and disobed- ience and in effect, Moses tells them that without obedience they may never gain the Promised Land.

The first three verses of Deu- teronomy 6 capsule today's les- son neatly: If the people will only listen to and obey G od s voice, they will live long and in- crease mighiily in the land of milk and honey and which God has promised them.

Then he goes on to explain

Sometimes the future looks black; we can’t see a glimmer of light anywhere . . . and we ask for help without really expecting an answer. But we’re wrong. Even that: small word, “help” means that we have realized our own inadequacy and turned to Something outside ourselves for guidance.

Called, or not called, “God is an ever-present help in trouble.” And whenever we ask Him to intervene, our lives are filled with new hope and inspiration.

He does not ask us to worry about the future. In fact, He doesn't intend us to worry at all. Worry indicates uncertainty and fear, and these have no place in Chris-

tian living.

Perhaps you are thinking “That, takes greater faith than I'll ever have I” But you ~ forget God’s help. Perfect trust . . . serene .peace of mind . . . these are your birth- right. And your Church will teach you to attain them.

In the second half of chapter 7 there is a long. detailed prom ise of victory, followed by tne basic eXhoration that if they forget the Lord their God and walk after the gods of the pagans they would perish.

Thus far. God has dealt gra- ciously with» Israel. Moses says in chapter 8. Never forget Him. For there is no sin more common than that of forgetting God. It is the sin of youth. mid- dle and old age: of the foolish and frivolous. the sensual and worldly; of professional and tradesmen. of women, teach- ers and students; of politicians and philanthropists: of press chers and theologians who are tempted to m ake ideas of God do duty for God.

There are three great and good reasons why Israel should zealously obey the Law of the Moses says (Deuteron- omy 10.12 — 11.32).

First. she has full knowledge of God's infinite greatness and goodness. Secondly, as gloriously redeemed this peo- ple from the enslaving and cor- rupting power of Egypt. And thirdly. if the Israelites are true to this kind of an ideal th ey will find life richly satisfying. The chapter concludes with a definite promise that no matter how powerful the inhabitants of Canaan might be at the time of Israel’s entrance into the Pro- mised Land. God will give them a sweeping victory if they are but obedient to Him.
