A THOUGHT.

Ilow few who live and die are ever known beyond the precincts of their own neighlmrhoods ! They are beloved by a tow and perhaps hated by as many, who live in their vicinity, but they soon do- pai‘t from the World and leave no trace behind—In a few years their names are forgotten and none remember that such individuals ever existed. Thus we shall pass away. How humiliating the thought ! Yet we are tugging and striv- ing for honor and distinction. \Vliat can they yield us if obtained ? How much better to strive for real virtues, that when We are called from the scenes of time We may he prepared for a more :rlorious state, and leave behind an iii- tluence that shall be felt to the latest period of time. -

NINE TAILORS MAKE A MAN.

The origin of this proverb is as fol- lows:—— A poor lad was employed in London in carrying coal to different tail- ors. The industry, anti intelligenca, and economy of the-boy, caused ninc journeyman tailors to combine together and assist him. By their assmance he took astart and gradually rose to'beai \venllhv man, and ontbe pantiel of. his i-arriage he had inscribed ‘nine tailors made me a tnan,’ which motto has been distorted frotn its original intention, thereby casting a slur tipon a valuable order of mechanics.
