SENATOR FERGUSON,

Twe Parrror has begun exhibition week by making an invidious and unneces- eary comparison in respect to Senator Ferguson and Sir Louis Davies.

Senator Ferguson is not to bea candi« date in the coming contest, So far he hes taken no part in the preliminary dia« cussion. Why the Patriot has gone out of its way to attack bim, personally, o this juveture, in an offensive way, is diffi« cultto determine when there are impor~ tant public questions to be debated and considered by the people. In the course of the past week Toe Examiner advanced several cogent reasone why the people should in the coming contest, formally and emphatically tcontradiet Sir Wilfrid Laurier’s false and injurious declaration to the effect that they do not desire a pre- ference in the British market. These reasons have not been met. Is it because the Pat-ict is at aloss for an anewerthat it now eulogises Sir Louis aud disparages Senator Ferguson ?

The Patriot admits that Senator Fergu son has “some talent, some infoimation, but his talent is destructive and not constructive and as for this information it is always vindictively and not persuasive ly employea, giving the impression of a bat fullof figures anda head full of malignoity.”

Let us test this statement in the light of known facts.

It is to be remembered that Senator

Ferguson was not, Jike Sir Louis Davies, “born with a eilver spoon in his mouth.” There were not

many of the years of his youth in which he had nothing to do but go to school and college. He didn’t ‘‘ finish” his educa- tion in England. He went to a country school like other country boys; and then he sought his fortune on the farm. With littie capital, except a strong constitution and a.clear brain, he has by his industry aud ability succeeded in honestly accumu- lating a competencye

In the meantime he has been abie to

take a not insignificant part in public affairs. He wasone of the foremost of those in Prince Edward Island who ad~ vo;ated the Confederation of British Norib America. In this regard he exhibit- ed a breadth ot view and patriotic fore- sight which was wanting in Sir Louie Davies. Sir Louis opposed, with all his might, the great measure in which he and his party now opealy rejoice, and to which be and his fellows owe their present prominence as members of the Govern- ment of Canada, together with their tin~ prt tiles.

Then, be was an ardent promoter ef the P.K Island K.i way, which everyone now recogn zes as a great boon. Sir Louis Davies who now retires io the Superinteadent’s palace car when he travels at the public expence, aid who would, if he could, gain his election by means of a coerced ‘*rail~ way vote,” opposed the railway with all his ability.

After scme time, Senator Ferguson be-~ came a member of the Legislature and Gov- ernment of which the Hon. W.W. Sullivan was leader. Itis now admitted by many Liberals that this was one of the best administrations that Prince Edward Island ever poccessed; and Senator Fergueon was the Premier’s right hand man.

While he was a member of this admin- istration Senator Ferguson laid the foundation for the claim againstthe Do,| roinion

presented it in the Senate—oa the strength of which the Belfast and Murray Harbor Railway is now being built, and on the strength of which the other branch lines; that the province needs will in the future be constructed.

These are but afew of the many is- stances im which Senator Fergueon has displayed “‘constructive ability” of mo raean order. He has, it is true, ability of another kind. Though Sir Louis ia a bars rieter bred anda special pleader te the man ner born, he bas Jearned that Senator Fer- gueon’s intimate and accurate knowledge ef publie affairs aed his ability in debate are not to be deepieed. It was truly remarked a few years ago, by a Belfaster who had attended several meetings at which the two men were pitted against eash other, that “ Donald ean floor Davies every time.” Tne Leader of the Government in the Senate, too, if we mistake not, the Hon. David Mills, kas found in Senator Ferga- son an antagonist whom he is compelled to reepect There’s a goed time coming— we’re almost there—in whieh Senator Fergueon’s talents will have fuller scope thao they have at preeent to build up the interests of the country,—aaed down hum-« bug acd deceit !

While it is true that the Senator was not always successful in securing a ma- jority of the voters—be always had a strong eupport from mea of the better sort

and at the last election that he con= tested he obtained a hundred and twenty-five more voles in the city

of Charlottetown than Sir Louis Davies —it is also true that hie ability has been recognized throughout the country,—and by common consent it is admitted that be has fairly won a foremost place in the Senate of Canada.

As for Sir Leuis Davies, while he has, heretofore, succeeded in obtaining a ma- jority of votes, it has also been demon- strated in the last four years that he is “in with abad crowd ;” and with that crowd heis doomed to defeat in the coming election

—They say thatSir Charles Tupper predicted a yictory in 1896, and that his prophecy was not fulfilled. That may be true. But he predieted victories io 1878, 1882, 1887, and 1891. That makes tour fulfilled predictions to one that miss ed. It ,is a pretty good record, and we should say that as a judge of the opinions of the people Sir Charles ie better than the gentlemen who have guessed right only once in five chances.
