Tare Government Cuttrers.—The Critic, Capt. McLaren, was in Georgetown on Sat urday. The Acadia has been transferred to the Nova Scotia coast, with headquarters at Halifax. She was in Georgetown, on Satur- day, getting *alance of her coal. Capt. Mec- Laren says that only six American seiners were on his beat, last week, and he had no trouble in keeping his eye on them.

Moonticnt Excrrsios.—The members of the Artillery Band bold their annual moon- light excursion in the steamer St. Lawrence, to-morrow night. The steamer will leave the wharf at8p. m. There will be brass and string bands in attendance. The success of previous excursions under the same auspices may be taken as an iniication that the coming one will be first-class in every respect.

Nearty Draownep.—A young lad named McPherson, while fishing for smelts on Con- nuliy’s wharf, this afternoon, fell into the water. The cries of his companions broug it te the scene some men who were working on the wharf, one of whom jumped into the water after the boy, who, owing to his long immersion, was insensible when brought ashore, but ander tne care of Dr. Conroy he soon recovered.

A CLever Capraty. —The schooner Jubilee, owned by Capt. Malcolm McDouald, George- town, arrived ia that port on Saturday, 15 h inst , and landed some 100 barrels mackerel. We understand that part of this fare was taken ina very clever way. The fish were schooling round the schooner and the men Were fishing with hook and line, when a hap- PY thought strack the master to run his seine. This was done. The fish were kept on top of the water by plenty of bait while the seine was cast around them. When all Was ready, the schooner sailed over the back rope and the seine was pursed up, thereby securing some 36 barrels of prime fish. Well done, Capt. Walker. ;

Young Mary Morrison was married last Tuesday week at Cow Bay, C. B.; tu- morrow she will be buried. On coming home from church yesterday she went int: the old house, then went home and got the tea. A peculiar noise was heard up stairs snd their friends rushed up, when they found her in a pool of blood, and a bloody razor lying beside her. The act was delib erately planned as she got the ragor at home. She and her husband were devoted toeach other. She has not been talkative since her wedding, and to a triend she said she wasafraid her soul would be lost. The coroner's verdict was, ** A fit of temporary insanity.” :

DIVERSION OF TRADE. Ottawa, Sept. 17.

The election in Cardwell will be held on Oct. 3rd.

In the election trial for Ottawa County, inthe Quebec Legislature, on Saturday, Dr. Geo. Autry admitted to have hired a out 100 men who polled illegal votes for the Grit candidate, as personators of dead and absent voters.

A special cable states that several Glas- gow, Liverpool and London firms trading with Canada are preparing to divert future shipments from ports of the United States to Canadian ports. They will cease con- signments via United States during the winter.

A meeting uf the Cabinet Council was held this afternoon, but nu important issues were discussed.

Montreal, Sept. 17.

In an interview between Hon. Mr. Chapleau and the leaders of the Conser- vative Party here, it was decided not to bring out a straight party candidate for Montreal East, but that the Conservatives would endurse Mr. Lepine, the labor candidate.

There was a flurry in the tobacco trade to-day, caused by the announcement that Smith, Fische! & Co., cigar manufacturers, were in difficulties and that the senior partner was absent from the city. An in- formal meeting of creditors was held this afternoon, when the accountant was ap- pointed to examine the books and draw up a statement. The direct liabilities are almost entirely held abroad, and amount to $14,000. The indirect liabilities are in the neighborhood of $50,000.

R. J. Elliot, (Advocate), while walking on the street, this evening, was struck ou the head by the hoof of a runaway horse, and sustained injuries, from which he is net likely to recover.

A Murderers’ Confession.

Montreal, Sept. 17.

Angus Jacobs, the Indiin murderer, is on trial in the Court of Queen’s Bench. The trial will probably last three days. D-tective Trimp’s evidence to-day contain- ed the fo lowing confession made by the prisoner ; ‘‘I will tell you the whole thing. [ killed her with astone, striking her on the head. Dividing the Profi‘s, Miyneapouis, Minn., Sept. 17. Charles Pillsbury & Co., the largest milling firm in the world, jast finished a division of $40,000 among the employes, in pursuance of the profit-showing plan, adopted four years ago.

Fishing for the latter days of the week was not encouraging, as the weather was blustry and inclement.

About 25 sail of American fishermen left Gloucester for North Bay last week: and some of them arrived at this port to- day and report no mackerel on their shore. Some of these vessels abandoned seining, and are fitting out for bank fishing.

The repairs to the Breakwater, under the supervision of Mr. Cantwell, are pro- gressing rapidly to completicn, considering the very disadvantageous inshore wind and sturmy weather lately. Mr. Cantwell feels confident that the work, when completed, will stand the test of the giant svuth- easter.
