What they will say now cw easily be im- agined In order to put a stup to this un- healthy competition between dealers we understand there was a meeting of hide men held in this city yesterday for the pu pose of bringing about some concerted action in the trade whereby prices may bronglit down to their actual value so as ¢ enabic both dealers and tanners to do business on a profitable basis. STAPLES IN HALIFAX FREIGHT MARKET. Haurrax, Oct. 24.—The past week has been one of great excitement in staples. The dry fish receipts were 23,369 qtls., and shipm nts 6,745. Quotations are un- changed. The mackerel receipts were 1,- 717 barrels., and shipments 2,213, of which 687 went'to New York. Most of the bal- ance went to Boston. Prices are unchanged. Oats are 4lc. @ 45c. for Prince Edward Island, the quality varying. Receipts, 2,750 oushels from P. E Island, and 800 bushels from the New Brunswick borders. Potatoes are unchanged ; receipts, 6,000 bushels ; shipments, 3,500 bushels. Freights are steadily improving. Coast- ing vessels are scarce for charters, and there is some inquiry for large vessels to take deals andtimber. | CANADA LAMBS IN THE AMERICAN MARKET.
Canada lambs were in geod demand at the Sixtieth street yards, New York, on Monday last, and realized very satisfactory prices, About 5,800 head changed hands at from $5.20 to $6.00 per 100 lbs, as fol- lows :--177 Canada lambs, averaging 77 lbs, at $6 ; 239 do, weighing 70 to 76lIbs each, at $5.874 ; 329 do, 77 to 112 lb each, at $5.20 - 1,049 do 66 to 78 lbs each; $5.10 to 5.624 ; 2,154 do, 75 to 80 lbs each, at $5.50 to 6.00 ; 1,905 do, 75 to 82 lbs each, $5,- 56} to 6.125. A few Canada sheep were also sold on the same market as follows :— 67, weighing 115 to 113 Iba each, at $4.25 to 5.00. and 288 do 125 to 130 Ibs at $4.25 te 4.50 per 100 lbs.
TRADE WITH BRAZIL.
We stated the other day that an eminent | tirm of steamship owners have under consid- eration the placing of a line of steamships on the route between Halifax and Brazil. Canada offers a bonus ot $50,000, and the Montreal Gazette is informed that the Gov- ernment of Brazil has consented to grant a like bonus. The distance from Pernambuco and Rio is shorter to Halifax than to New York. There isa good trade to be done. The Garette points vut that there are many descriptions of goods now imported by Can- ada from or through the United States which might be better imported from Brazil. For instance, out of a total of 1,- 969,000 lbs. of cotfee imported into Canada, we obtained 1,587,520 lbs from the United States; of 110,938,952 lbs of sugar imported, Canada got 45,199,335 lbs. from the United States; of 5,876,000 feet of maahoyany and rosewood, 5,827,000 feet game to Canada via the United States; ot 453,775 lbs. of India Rubber, 458,742 lbs. were bought in the United States; of 8,881,- 461 lbs. of tobacco, 8,852,397 lbs. were ob- tained from the United States. In a word, not a pound of the chiet exports of Brazil is shipped direct to the Dominion. The ‘‘Gazette” that ‘‘the experiment of a line steamships is assuredly worth while making, in view of the possibility of direct trade which exist. We can supply Brazil with many of the products she imports, and we ean otfer a market for her staple exports.” —Halifrx Herald.
ACADIAN MINES.
Operations are being briskly carried on at the works of the Canada Steel Co., Ac- adian Mines, at present. ‘ihe blast furnace was lighted on Saturday, 10th inst., and the manufacture of pig iron is being pushed vigorously. The foundry and rolling milis are also “‘humwming”’ lively. Altogether about 500 men and boys are being steadily emploved. ‘The new sheds at the blast fur- mace are nearly completed. The building is 450 f. ot in length and 80 feet in width. The cars of ore, coal, coke and lime stone are run into and out of the building on a strong trestle work. ‘The inclined plane by which tue ore, &c., was formerly conveyed to the top of the furnace, has been done away with, and is new raised in a perpen- dicular elevator, the height of which 1s about 70 feet. One cage with loaded hods goes up while the other with the empty hods is coming down. ‘The new sheds and

For Mr. DesBrisay has been a Goy- ernment official forty years ; and with the small salary he always drew, it could not bé supposed that his savings are sufficient to support his declining years. No solvent merchant, manufacturer, dealer or huckster —no man—would so treat a person who had, under such circumstances, spent a life- time in his employ. But we suppose a gov- ernment is, like a corporation—without either conscience or feeling. Certain it is that successive Governments in Prince Ed- ward Island have been guilty of shameful acts of heartlessness to poor men perform- ing public duties. The present Govern- ment however (we regret to state it) have, in their way of action, eclipsed all the unfeeling administration of former years. Other governments contented themselves with the simple act of decapitation by meansof vote of a single branch of the Legislature, or a notification in the Royal Gazette. But, with a refinement of heart- lessness, the present Government invoked the ‘‘three estates of the realm,” and passed an Act of the Legislature taking away the living of one of their oldest and most faithful officials, and making no provision whatever for his support in old age. It will, of course, be said that it is necessary to be economical; but the Government should know that there is a distinction be- tween economy and meanness which the
people of this Province are careful to pre-
serve ; and while pleased, to note the form- er, they will not tolerate the latter. It may be said, too, that Mr. DesBrisay knew well that he was liable to lose his office at any time, and should not have continued at work for a salary barely necessary to supply his immediate wants. But there is much in habit; and Mr. DesBrisay, doubtless, felt it hard to break years, and go forth to rough it in the world

While on this subject, a few words res- pecting the tenure by which Local officials hold office. Ever since we obtained Res- ponsible Government, it has been based upon a very wrong principle ; and the re sult has been unknown, unaccountable loss to the Island. And besides the absolute loss, there has been engendered, through it, the spirit of meanness in those who take the most active part in politics. In private life a man would be thought despicably mean who, by intrigue and the use of per- sonal influence, had a man deprived of his situation and means of living in order that he might have them for himself. But, so deeply has this spirit of meanness taken root in our local politics, that hundreds of men (save the mark) are found who use every means in their power to have poor public officials ejected, so that they them- selves may obtain the vacancies thereby created ! Besides this, it is the direct cause of a great deal more than half the personal bitterness which new so degrades political life in this Island.
Now, it is high time that our Civil Ser- vice should be reduced to a business basis ; and we hope the leaders and followers of both political parties will set to work as soon as possible, and agree.
1, That a Commission of say three busines, men be appointed to examine and see hew large a staff is necessary to do the business of the Province. r
2. That the officials be re-arranged on the ground of their past competency, and that they be secured in their offices during good behavior and while they refrain from takinz an active part in politics.
3. That each party, as it obtains power, shall have the right to fill vacancies caused by death, resignation or bad behaviour.
