The after-dinner speeches were, on the

| whole, very good—short, lively and to the

poiut ; and it is worthy of remark that the

| old idea that men cannot have a pleasant

time together, in a social way, without the use of wine, was disproved in this instance, Care had been taken in making out the programme of intellectual good things ; and the principal speakers had evidently thought something abont what they said before getting on their legs. So the post prandial remarks were excellent ; aud good humor pervaded the company, without the drawback of intoxication. Had ihere been a larger number of good songs, and less of “Res a jolly good fellow,” the effect would, perhaps, have been more pleasing
